Lawrence's Story

Life Summer '77 The day after receiving a reward for High School sports I was on my way to Parris Island. “You’re obligated to serve your country” the recruiter said, that led me to enlisted in the Marines in 1976. Now I was on the plane to bootcamp. Later I realized that having bent on the track team, taking karate a few years and being young prepared me for the physical aspect of bootcamp, but the mental part was a different story. Being intimidated by three drill sergeant night and day took some getting use to which I did. Three months later that seemed like forever came quick, and now I was on my way back to home to start the fall session at Cleveland State Univ. I would do another three year as a Marines reservist and was discharge from active reserve duty as a sergeant. As for my first year at CSU I finished with a GPA of 2.54, which was a disappointment to me. College there turned out to be very lonely; I didn’t have anyone to turn to with my difficult studies. Classes were so large and professors were untouchable. There were student help clinics but you felt like a number and not a person. Summer 1978 That summer while traveling on the Euclid bus heading toward Windemere Station, around 43rd & Euclid, something caught my eye that got me off the bus. I approach the 4300 building and walked in. I spoke with a rep name Price, we spoke for a few days. Soon I made a decision to leave CSU and signed up to attend Electronic Technology Institute (ETI) for an associate degree in Electronics Engineering. I started classes that fall, my plan was to get a two year degree and get a job, then have the company pay for my bachelor degree. I went on to graduate from ETI with a B average. In the final quarter of the program, IBM visited the school and was looking to recruit the top students (I being amoung them) to be trained on their new personal PC. This was everything I had planned for. Training locations were in Chicago or California. On graduation (...Expand for more
June 1980) I had decided not to take IBM offer, because of an event that occur a year before this offer. The Spring of 1979 that cause me to abandon my desired career and pursuit a new direction that would change my life forever. Spring 1979 In the spring of 1979 while still attending ETI, I became interested in a TV advertised commercial. The commercial featured a computer programming school that was based on the far Westside of Cleveland. On a late Tuesday in March, I attempted to make it to an open house the school was giving from 7-10 pm. The distance I travel to get to the school took longer than I anticipated; I arrived 15 minutes before the end. I was advised to return next week, so I left to head home. Waiting for the bus that night, I was reminded of an incident of being chased by white youths after leaving a movie theater in their neighborhood. I started to walk eastward while I kept looking for the next schedule bus. I came upon a more lighted area, a frail older white woman who upon seeing me approaching begins to shake. I decided to just pass by but looked behind me and saw the bus approaching. So I waited and entered the bus. About six to ten blocks later the bus made a stop next to a bar where a group of drunken men were carousing. I began to think that God was definitely watching over me. The bus pulled into West 98 Rail Station, so I exited to catch the rail train and get home quicker. Walking down to the platform, I notice all type of racial slurs on the wall. Was getting off here a mistake I begin to wander. There was no one on the platform except me, as I waited for the train. I then heard noises of someone(s) coming down the stairs. My adrenalin began to rises as I anticipated some crisis occurring. I look toward the stairs from the middle of the platform where I sat, and saw only one individual. Oh well, it only one and he better keep his distance if he knows what’s best I thought. To my surprise he came to the middle of the
