Lawrence's Story

Life After High School I was invited to go play with the U.S. Army by Uncle Sam and after volunteering I did so until 1994 when I retired after 22 years at the rank of First Sergeant. I've been married for 43 years to Karin who I met while assigned in Augsburg, West Germany in as a member of Military Intelligence. I served in many capacities as a Military Policeman, as a Patrol Supervisor, MP Platoon Sergeant, Military Police Duty Officer. (1982-1985 I was fortunate to be assigned and approved by the U.S. House as the NCO in Charge of Allied Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin Germany), I also served in Army Recruiting Command as a Station Commander, Acting Company First Sergeant (1SG), Master Sales Trainer, Operations Sergeant for the largest Recruiting Battalion in the U.S. Army and ultimately as the Company First Sergeant in the Sacramento Recruiting Company Sacramento CA. I Retired from the Army in 1994 and then worked as a DOD (Federal) Police Officer for 6 1/2 years doing Patrol, Criminal investigations, extraditions, and returning Federal Parole Violators to Federal Custody. I was working for the Sparta, WI, Police Department when I received line of duty injuries to my hip and back from being hit by a drunk driver and while responding to an emergency call and again to my back while recovering some stolen property from a double burglary I investigated and solved. It was necessary for me to undergo 2 additional back surgeries and 6 to my hip as a result of the amount of damage to my back and hip, I was involuntarily retired from the Police Department. As it stands now, I will probably never walk again without the assistance of a cane but I cherish my time as a police officer and greatly miss it. In mid-October 08, I went to sleep and woke up 6 or so weeks later. It seems I contracted a staph infection in my right hip, lower back and left shoulder. I was finally released in January 09. I experienced a recurrence of the infection in late April and was discharged from the hospital in early May. The drunk driver who hit me was ultimately convicted if Drunk driving 2nd Offense (over two times the legal limit .18 BaC), failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, Refusal (had to do a legal blood draw), and leaving the scene of an accident. As a result of the recurring infection. I was on anti-biotics for a year and a half...Expand for more
. And as a result of all of this they totally removed my damaged right hip ball and socket which they re-inserted in June 2010 In the meantime I was forced to get around in a wheelchair and a walker.I am glad to be alive and thank God everyday that I can at least get around and take care of myself. To top it off the city lied and refused to admit I hurt myself both times while at work in an effort to stave off an increase in their liability insurance. I finally received a hearing after almost 4 1/2 years of delays and after the judge ultimately called my chief and the City a pack of liars the court awarded me my Duty Disability I am still heart broken over losing my job as a Police officer but at least the State clearly recognized that this was as a result of the line of duty injuries I received. . Even though I am in continuous back and hip pain I've joined my Army buddy in the local Trap shooting league and hope to show much improvement there as I have to use a stool to sit on waiting my turn to shoot., guess I'm hard headed and refuse to give up the idea of leading more normal life style and I'll continue to work towards that goal and still hope to get rid of the pain. I still Deer Hunt in the fall and Turkey hunt in the fall and the spring but all I can do is sit in a ground blind. I thank God every day for my blessings realizing that there are many in this world who are in much worse shape than I and thank God for the many good memories of friends, Army buddies and some very good people while attending Surrattsville. UPDATE: had a 6th back surgery and still in the damn back brace and I can't even shoot or hunt at least for a year but we will have to see if I can go that long without hunting and shooting, . This gives more meaning to the phrase of Freedom isn't Free. As time has progressed I am still moving and refuse to give up the ghost.. I am always happy to hear from my classmates, it lifts my spirits just as letters from home did while in the Army. Not much planned for 2020 other than trap shooting and my hunting. Any of you put there who have hints and/or suggestions on how to improve my score PLEASE send me your secrets. I travel with my wife and seem to go mainly to Florida and her parents in California and on cruises. please feel free to call and chat about old times my number is 608-269-5688.
