Lawrence's Story

After high school I joined the teamsters union. I worked as a truck drivers helper. The company was Hopaco in Honolulu. Later there was an opportunity to sign up for drivers for a movie called The Hawaiians starring Charleston Heston. I was picked to go to Maui in June 1969. It was a very exciting job. I was selected to drive the special effects team headed by a guy named Norman Breedlove; father of Craig breedlove holder of the first land speed record the salt flats. My job was whenever they needed to go somewhere to purchase things for the set I would take them. I learned alot working with them. Seeing how they set up the effects they used in the sets. The money was great. Only thing was your schedule started from 4am to ten at night. The job was easy. All the drivers would get in the back of a truck and we would play cards until we needed to do tasks. after the ending of the movie film ended on maui they went to Kaua'i to finish the filming. I did not go there but was told to go back to honolulu to go on another filming movie called Tora tora. the job lasted about six months. Later I left the union. I decided to further my schooling. I attened K.c.c. to study. I attened classes for 4 years until my mom asked me that my grandma had cancer wanted me to go and care for her. I didn't get to finish my studies. Ileft for Lana'i; by the way I didn't mention to you all that I was born on Lana'i. I ended up taking care of both of my grandparents from 1971 to 1991. I ended up working for Dole pineapple for twenty years until they closed down the plantation. My grand parents both passed away in 1989 4 months apart. My grandma was first to pass followed by my grandfather. During those in between years I met and ...Expand for more
married Lanai girl. We had 4 children My oldest a boy name kaleo, and three daughters Kawai, hoa'la and my youngest one Na kala. In 1990 my son passed away in a car accident on Lana'i at a young age of 19. I was devastated by the lost of my only son. Later I moved the Family to Mau'i because I didn't want to work for the hotel. I sought work in the food service business as a delivery driver and later became a supervisor. the company was called Hawaii Restaurant Service. After about 6 yrs. the company went out of business. I was lucky that my dad was born on Maui and that we had property there. Actually about 18 of them. I asked my father if I could have 2 properties. One to live on and the other to farm Taro. Later I got a job with the Lahaina Kaanapali Railroad company. I got the job in 2000 and have been working there till now. I am a engineer for them. My life took a downward turn for the worst as my wife and i got a devorce; she was not happy to be in Maui and she missed her family. I understood her emotions and agreed to it. I raised my last two daughters who were still going to high school on Maui and didn't want to go back to Lanai and wanted to stay with me. Right now they have grown and have their own children I have started to travel a lot; meeting new friends from all over from Canada ,USA. I go to Las Vegas three times a year because I love to Play poker tournaments. Now I'm thinking of visiting Europe and New Zealand. I have friends there. New Zealand I mean. Right now I'm single parent and am very happy to live a life of meeting new people and exchange ideas. Anyway this is the life and journeys of a rough rider from Roosevelt high. Aloha and miss all of you Aloha Larry Mano.............
