Lee's Story

Life Lee Rose is a recently retired lighting designer and director of photography with over 50 years working in the Television, Film, Music and Live Event areas of entertainment lighting. He now is spending time travelling and expanding his photography in underwater and night astro-photography, concentrating on the Milky Way. Lee has been nominated twice for Emmy Awards. First in 1994 for the "Yanni: Live at the Acropolis" special taped at the historic Herodeon, the world's oldest theatre (almost 2,000 years old), which is adjacent to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The second nomination came in 1997 from his design work on "Yanni: Tribute" Another live music special taped at the Taj Mahal, in Agra India and The Forbidden City in Beijing China. This featured the first time in history that the Taj Mahal was ever illuminated. In addition Lee was given Lighting Dimensions (The entertainment industry trade magazine) "Lighting Designer of the Year" for his lighting design work on that project. Since 1998, Lee has been a partner in Design Partners, Inc.. Design Partners is an award winning association of Lighting Designers and Directors of Photography working from its Hollywood offices at Sunset Gower Studios. He recently completed a lighting design job for the upcoming Steve Martin movie, "Bringing Down the Houze" for DP Julio Macat, ASC. He also worked with Cameron Crowe (director of Almost Famous) and his DP John Toll, ASC on their film titled "Vanilla Sky" with Tom Cruise in the lead. Lee had also participated, with the same production team on the lighting design work for Almost Famous' concert scenes. During the last 40 years in film and TV lighting, Lee's lighting design work has run the gamut of styles from, music videos & concert specials for artists like; Yanni, John Tesh, Muddy Waters, Bonnie Raitt, Genesis, Pat Benatar, Bad English, Cheap Trick, Phil Collins, Gloria Estefan, Debbie Gibson, Amy Grant, Kenny Loggins, Queensryche and The Tubes, to award shows including; The Golden Globes, The Soap Opera Awards, The Vida Awards, The Clio Awards and The Genesis Awards. From variety and comedy shows like; American Bandstand, Amnesty International's "Free to Laugh", The Hard Rock's "Joint" Opening Special, Meet The Hansens, In A New Light (an ABC primetime Aids special), comedy specials with Paul Rodriguez, Gary Shandling and Robert Wuhl, to series including; Your Big Break, Greed, Beyond Belief, The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show, The Dennis Miller Show, Blade Warriors, DC Follies and Rimba's Island Plus countless other series, specials, pilots, live events, concerts, commercials, features films and lighting system installations. Before forming Ocean, Rose, Lee spent 10 years on the concert touring circuit with acts including; Boston, Ted Nugent, Molly Hatchet, Asia, Alcatrazz, Pat Benatar, Johnny Winter, J. Geils and the Pat Travers Band. He even toured with Bruce Willis' blues band "Bruno & The Heaters". His introduction to music lighting came with his work in concert nightclubs and theaters including the world famous Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio. Lee began his lighting career in theater working at the Heights Youth Theater in Cleveland and the Phoenix Little Theater in Phoenix, Arizona in the late 1960's.
