Leland's Story

Life An interesting bio for someone many consider "the class clown". I attended Southwestern College from 1985-1986 in Winfield, KS and then Joined the U.S. Navy in 1987. I was on active duty for five years and spent some quality time in the Middle East in 1989-91. I was discharged in 1992, finished my BS degree at SW Missouri State University in 1993 and attended Grad school there until 1994. I have been employed at the Unites State Environmental Protection Agency since 1994 as an Environmental Scientist with a focus on air pollution. I finished Graduate school at the University of Kansas from 1994-1997 in the Environmental Engineering program. I was commissioned an environmental science officer in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1997 and currently hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel , my missions have ranged from Central America Medical Support Missions to supporting the 82cd Airborne down at Fort Polk, LA for jungle training. I was deployed on January 2003 to Fort McCoy, WI for 18 months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as an instructor. in the Environmental Health and Safety Department since 1999. I am married and have two children, Bennett Paul (23) and Annabel Lee (15) and live in a Civil War Era (1860) Brick house about an Hour north of KC. Workplace I work as an Environmental Scientist (emph. Air Pollution) with the US Environmental Protection Agency Region VII(KS, NE, IA, MO). I spend a lot of time working with the regional tribes, states, and counties to help keep the air clean, I also do a lot of guest teaching at the regional universities as well as being an Adjunct instructor at Maple Woods Community College and the Business and Technology Center in Kansas City, MO. Army I returned in May 2004 from an 18 month deployment to Fort McCoy, WI (Yes, Wisconsin!)under Operation Enduring Freedom. I was part of a unit called up to mobilize reserve units. As a military instructor, I had over 24,000 students in 18 months. I have recently been mobilized to an active duty status (May 13, 2010) and I'm currently assigned to the Environmental Branch of the US Army Corps of Engineers for a one year rotation that can be extended up to three years.
