Lenny's Story

School My children laugh when I tell them I wore a tie and jacket from first to sixth grade. They laxed the rules in 7th and 8th grade when they allowed the boys to wear itchy royal blue button down sweaters instead of jackets.GQ we were not.I guess when you grow up and do not know any better it all seems so normal at that particular time. They wear shorts and tee shirts year round in Florida when they go to school. How lucky they are.I remember flipping baseball cards with Paul Killea on the side of OHR steps when I was in second grade.Yaz,Mickey Mantle,Pete Rose,Steve Carlton,Roberto Clemente. He always beat me.The rest of my cards ended up in my spokes on my bike tires or soaked in water to see how thick I could get the cards then peel off the cardboard piece by piece. If only someone had told me to put them in a plastic sheet and never play with them I probably could have been a rich man.Ha!Ha! College I was a hospital corpsman in the Navy which is very similar to nursing. After leaving the service I entered college. It took me 3.5 years to finish a 2 year program due to all of the prerequisites I had to do. Workplace I have been an R.N. for almost 20 years.I have worked in the emergency room, intensive care, telemetry, head trauma, spinal cord injuries, surgical, orthopedic units and have for the last 7 years worked as a case manager for home health care.My work area is the northwest part of Palm Beach County and I visit medicare patients in there homes.I do wound care,I.V.infusions,cardiac,diabetic,pulmonary tea...Expand for more
ching and overlook home health aides, physical, speech and occupational therpists. After working in hospitals since I was eighteen I decided 7 years ago to get out of the hospital as a lot of nurses have lately and work in peoples homes.I have to utilize all of my nursing skiils on a daily basis.I plan to do this until I retire. Military Out of 80 guys in my squad in boot camp I got meritoriously advanced with one other person to an E-2,which means I earned an extra stripe while there.Corps school in San Diego for 3 months.I was stationed at Balboa hospital, right across from The San Diego Zoo.I took trips to Las Vegas,Los Angelas,Mexico while I was there.6 months at Jacksonville Naval Air Station where at the age of eighteen I worked in a newborn nursery Taking care of newborns. What an eye opener that was.3 years working at Mayport Naval Air Station in the hospital clinic. It was about 200 yards from the Atlantic Ocean,A one story brand new building run by 40 corpsman,6 doctors and 2 nurses. We did everything from suturing to riding ambulances, shooting x-rays,drawing blood, rolling casts. and the respect of every person on that base.It was great when the ships would come in ,I met a few guys I went to High School with when they came in dock for medical checkups and it was great seeing a familar face at the time.I lived on Jax beach for awhile with my buddies John Reed and Steve Whittenberg.Anyone who was there with me knows during that time we had a blast, alot of partying, for us in our way that was our college years.
