Leo's Story

Life Initially out of School after some odd jobs I went to work Sooter Studios in Northern Manitoba. After a short time with them I decided I wanted something a bit more stable and joined the CAF. It was a great education but the military life was not for me so I left and went to work for Sask Tel. About the same time in 1977 I married my wife Anita who is from Brownlee. After a few years at Sask Tel I moved again to work for Esso Resources in Swan Hills Alberta. I stayed with them for about 9 years in Swan Hills and then for another two at Quirk Creek just south of Calgary. After I was with Esso a few years they found I had a knack for Projects so most of my time with them was doing project work. We lived in Okotoks until 1997. When I left Esso in 1990 We started our own Company, Bits and Bytes Software Corp.. We were packaging and developing shareware but before long I was back doing SCADA projects for Spartan Controls while Anita ran the manufacturing and Marketing of the Shareware Products. We ran both groups for about three years but we were both working 16-hour days and we soon realized we really needed to be working less so we shut down the retail software group. In 1994 Spartan convinced me to come on board as the Manager for SCADA Projects so Anita was left alone to manage the company until 1997 when we shut it down as well. The work at Spartan was great when I had started doing Scada Projects for them in 1991 I think there were 4 of us. When I left in 1997 I had a group of 55. During my time at Spartan we had done a number of International projects and I had traveled to Singapore and China to assist & train staff for Fisher Controls who was one of Spartan Principals. In September of 1997 while I was working with them in China they offered me a three-year contract as the Oil and Gas Consultant for Asia Pacific Based out of Singapore. My ro...Expand for more
aming area was to be China to Australia and included India and Pakistan. It was an offer we could not refuse and in November of 1997 we became residents of Singapore. We now had two boys Dallin who is now 21 and Dustin who is now 17. After a bit of an adjustment period we settled in very nicely and used the opportunity to do some traveling. Part of my contract gave us a home leave trip every year so for a few extra dollars of airfare and a whole lot more for hotels etc. we could take a trip around the world. So all in one trip you could see the Coliseum in Rome and three weeks later be standing on the Great Wall in China. All good fun but exhausting, we take much less aggressive holidays now. In the spring of 2000 I had my next big adventure. I found out quite by accident that I had advance heart disease and need an immediate triple bypass for my heart. The operation went well but of course everything changes when you have walked to the edge of the abysses and looked over the edge. I finished off my contract while researching what I could do to get back into shape and after I was done we went back to Canada for a while so I could rest up and get rolling and some alternative therapy. While in Canada we stayed in Medicine Hat as that is where I found what I thought was the best doctor for the therapy. It all went well and by June 2001 I had located a Doctor in Indonesia that could continue the program. With that in place I took a contract with Conoco as their Communications and Controls Consultant based in Jakarta Indonesia. From our Control room in Jakarta we control plants in Singapore and Malaysia selling Natural Gas to feed Power Stations, which generate electricity. We have additional pipelines being built now into both countries, which will keep me busy here for a while. A lot has happened since I wrote this. I am now living in Hua Hin Thailand.
