Leonard's Story

Life Well lets see. After leaving high school I joined the Navy. I traveled around a bit going to Groton Ct for submarine school and then Dam Neck Va for missile tech "A" school before I changed my rating to Tradevman. "Tradevman" stands for "Training Device Repairman". We called it toy doctor because what you do is fix simulators. Flight simulators, weapons systems simulators or any other training equipment such as film projectors and the like. I stayed in the Navy for almost 9 years until they told me I would have to go to sea. I had spent all my time on shore stations working with simulators and felt I was too old to start playing sailor so I got out and went to work for a company in Chicago called Gould. I hated that job and when I saw them putting up fences to keep the snow off of the freeways I started to long for San Diego. I got myself a job with a company called Cubic in San Diego working in the ACMI department. ACMI stands for air combat maneuvering and instrumentation. If you have seen the movie "Top Gun" then you have seen some of the equipment I worked on. It is a system to track pilots during training for dog fights and bombing runs. It was used by Top gun, the Navy's air combat school and Red Flag which is the Air Forces name for the same school. My position was called floater and what I did was to travel around to all the different ACMI sites and fill in for people that were on vacation, or sick, or just to flesh out man power for a new contract. That went well until I decided to get married. Once I was married it seemed I needed to be home a little more often so I changed jobs into the simulator division at Cubic. Worked at North Island in San Diego for about a year and then transferred to Mayport Fl. Worked in Mayport for about 3 years. I have two sons I acquire...Expand for more
d through marriage and one daughter that was born in Jacksonville Florida. Cubic lost the contract at Mayport so I hired on with Singer Link and moved to Mobile Al. Worked at the Coast Guard Training facility in Mobile for about 3 years before transferring to the manufacturing plant in Houston Tx. Was only there for 6 months before I hired on with Federal Express in Los Angeles. Worked in LA for 18 months and then transferred to Memphis Tn. I have been in Memphis now for 18 years. So since leaving school I have lived, in this order, in Orlando FL, Groton CT, Dam Neck Va, Millington Tn, Jacksonville Fl, back to Millington, then San Diego, Detroit Mi, Chicago Il, back to San Diego, back to Jacksonville Fl, Mobile Al, Houston Tx, Los Angeles Ca, and now Memphis. I have been married and divorced and married again. I am a private pilot with an instrument rating. I have built a 30 foot sail boat and sailed in the Pacific Ocean. I have climbed mountains driven race cars and am going sky diving this coming summer. I have looked down the throat of a volcano. When I was young I used to hear stories told by older folk that I could never believe. I always knew in my heart they were lying to me. When I left school I decided I would live my life so that when I told stories of the things I have done people would just know I was lying. I am still living with this in mind even today. There is an old Chinese curse that goes something like "May you lead an interesting life". My life is not all roses, and it is not always fun, but it does stay interesting and that is the way I like it. By the way, if your reading this thinking I am quite full of myself then you need to know I only filled this out cause Renetta asked me to. Thanks for asking Renetta, in my mind you have always been a sweetheart.
