Leonard's Story
Life
When a person leaves HS, he assumes that he will get rich, live forever, and have a ball
doing it. Well, rich didn't happen, (but I have been able to pay my bills), I no longer
expect to live forever, (but have been blessed with good health), and it HAS been a blast!
Simon and Garfunkel not withstanding, I credit Gilbert schools for preparing me
to make a living. Those who know me know that I was not always the
most focused student. However, some of what I was exposed to at GHS did sink in. I learned
mechanical drawing and wood working from Mr Lerma, metal working, farm
economics and Parliamentary proceedure from Mr. Kinney, typing from Mr Reese,
science from Mr. Burgdorf, Spanish basics from Mrs. Savage, math from Mr Wisdom,
English, literature & journalism from Mrs. Collins and Mrs Pitts, and Mr Savages
physical conditioning made USAF basic training seem like childs play. From my
classmates I learned about the many facets of people. Thank-you all for your
contributions, you have enabled me to stay employed.
After graduation, I spent 3 semesters at ASU, went to Brazil for 2 yrs., Married Edith
Thatcher (class of '65) and spent 20 yrs. in the USAF: 4 yrs. as a Spanish linguist, 16 a...Expand for more

Carpenter/Structural Superintendent. We were stationed in Monterey, CA; San Angelo,
TX; Key West, FL; D.C; AZ (Luke); Shemya, AK; Edwards, CA and Las Vegas, NV.
We have 2 children, Tom born in 1972, and Lori in 1977. Both are now married with
families of their own. We now (2022) have 7 grandkids, and 4 great grand kids. I retired from the USAF in 1988 and worked for EG&G Special Projects as a Carpenter and Project Superintendent for 11 1/2 yrs. I retired in Jan 2000,
and lived on a small farm in Hurricane, UT, where I farmed (just enough to keep the IRS
off our backs) raising hay, a few cows, apricots and container plants. (and lots of
mosquitoes)
In 2005 developers convinced me the farm was worth more to them than it was to me. We sold out and bought a house in town and some acreage near Bryce Canyon. We have spent summers since then making improvements to the raw land there, and enjoying the quiet of the mountain valley. In 2014 we sold the desert acreage and got most of our money back.
As of 2013, we are living back in Gilbert off E Guadalupe Rd.
I enjoy farming, gardening, photography, touring this great country, and
visiting with old acquaintances ............. Drop me a line.
