Dr.Leonard's Story

A Look Back and a Glance Forward By Dr. Leonard M. Breure, PhD I have now pasted the 50 year mark. That being the case, I thought this might be a good time to take a look, both backward and forward, at my life. What follows is a view from my perspective of this wild ride that is called life. So who is and was Leonard Matthew Breure? First, a Husband! For over 22 years I have had the joy and privilege of sharing my life with Diana. She has made me happier than anyone could ever imagine. We¿ve been able to share things, both good and bad, that most couples are never lucky enough to experience. The good things have allowed us to share many a smile and much laughter. The bad things have brought us closer together and made us stronger. In case you haven¿t figured it out, I love her more than I ever thought it was possible for one person to love another. She means the world to me! Secondly, I am a Father. I have been richly blessed with 4 wonderful children. Next to my wife, nothing in the world matters more to me than my kids. As I write this, they are all grown and out on their own. Kimberly is married to a wonderful young man named Matt. They live in PA but work over the border in NJ. Kim is a Social Worker for the State of NJ, Division of Youth and Family Services. Kevin is currently living in NJ, but will probably end up moving back to WI. He can¿t seem to make up his mind as to which state to call home. He is an EMT and Firefighter. Krista has finished college and begun her teaching career in PA. Tracey lives close by, here in WI. She is married to a terrific guy named Ryan. She is a stay at home mom. That brings me to my next category. I am also a Grandfather! Matthew Ryan Hall joined our family in May of 2006. While he gave everyone a good scare with some early health problems, he is doing fine now. He is big and tuff and the happiest kid I¿ve ever seen. Always laughing and smiling, he is the center of attention wherever he goes. I had the perfect example of what a grandfather should be when I was growing up. I just hope that I can be half the grandfather to Matt that my grandfather was to me. I¿m looking forward to teaching him everything my grandfather taught me. I couldn¿t be prouder or happier than when I get to spend time with Matthew. By the way, Matt now has a beautiful baby sister named Kaylie Marie! She is such a precious treasure! A little over a year old, she almost jumps out of Tracey¿s arms to get to me when I visit. I believe that the correct term to use to describe my next role would be Patriot. It has been a joy and a blessing as well as a privilege and an honor to live in the United States of America! While not perfect, I believe that our nation comes far closer than any other to that unobtainable goal. I place great value on the liberty and freedom that citizenship in this great nation provides. I also take seriously the duties and responsibilities that go hand and hand with it. I fly a flag in the yard, I vote ¿ always, I am active in my community. I get involved in the political process, pay attention to the issues, write letters to my elected representatives and keep abreast of their handling of the responsibility that we have given them. These are things we should all do. But I have chosen to take my patriotism a step further. I was also a Soldier. For almost 20 years, between active and reserves I served in the United States Army. I was medically retired in 1996 as a Sergeant First Class (SFC / E-7) holding 3 Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) - 95B5H Military Policeman, 11B5H Infantryman and 12D5H Combat Engineer with 17 personal and 3 unit citations. The ¿H¿ designator on each MOS signifies instructor status. Much of my time in the military was spent teaching other soldiers how to survive in combat. My biggest regret is that my service was cut short do to an injury suffered in the line of duty. While I receive some compensation as a Disabled Veteran, I would much rather to have been able to continue serving my country. Police Officer would define the next role, but there was much more to it than just that. I served as a Patrolman, Detective ...Expand for more
and Detective Sergeant in Prospect Park, NJ. With 12 citations and 14 awards, I was the most highly decorated officer on the department. I also served as Constable in Somerset Township, WI. The 15 years spent in law enforcement where some of the best in my life. I was a ¿cop¿s cop¿! I worked hard, making more arrests than anyone I worked with. I put in the extra effort and hours and went the extra mile to do my job as best as I knew how. I gave it 110%. Once again my service to my community was cut short due to a line of duty injury. I would have given almost anything to stay in law enforcement, but it just wasn¿t to be. I am very proud to be the recipient of the Street Survival 10 %¿s award for outstanding service during my years in law enforcement. I¿ve also spent a lot of time as a Student. Early in my career I began taking every course or class that I could get into. Both in the military and in civilian law enforcement I tried to get as much training as possible. All the seminars, in-service training and course work paid off. I how have a B.A. degree in Criminal Justice, a Masters in Criminal Justice Management and a PhD in Criminal Justice Education. The goal of all this training was to become the best teacher that I could be. For almost 30 years I have also been an Instructor. Whether it was training a young soldier to conduct a dismounted patrol, teaching a police officer how a make a felony stop or instructing a homeowner how to protect his family, I think I loved this job the most. Everyone seems to have one thing that they are exceptionally good at. For me it was training. A large part of these efforts were in the area of firearms & tactics training. I spent 8 years as the Range Master and Chief Instructor of the Passiac County Police Academy in NJ. I was the Training Coordinator for Tactics Training Center in MN and had my own training business for many years. I also handled the training for many police departments and several military units. Training was and is my passion! Directly related to the above, I am also an Author. While I have had numerous articles published in a number of police and firearms magazines and have written many training programs and manuals, my book was the highlight of my writing efforts. ¿The Personal Protection Handbook¿ was published in 2003 as a ¿comprehensive training manual for handgun, shotgun and rifle¿. My goal was to share as much of the knowledge and experience that I was able to amass over the years with my readers. While by no means a best seller, I think I have accomplished my goal. Most of my students have agreed. The only problem is that I think I¿ve given away as many copies as I¿ve sold! In an article that I wrote a while back called ¿The Warrior Way¿ I outlined those qualities and skills that I felt made a Warrior. A person dedicated to God and country, to family and friends, to right and wrong. One who would stand in the gap and fight for what was right ¿ no matter the cost. A sheepdog protecting the sheep from the wolves! As I look over that list, I can¿t help but feel that they are a good gauge of my life. They included: ¿ Dedication ¿ Mental Toughness ¿ Proper Mindset ¿ Skill at Arms ¿ Proper Equipment ¿ Realistic Training Heraclitus (circa 500 B.C.) said of men in battle; "Of every one hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there." "Eighty are nothing but targets." "Nine are real fighters, we are lucky to have them, they make the battle." "Ah, but the One..." "One of them is a Warrior..." "He will bring the others back." Whether it was as a soldier defending my country, a police officer patrolling my community or a husband & father protecting my family, I have spent my whole life walking the warrior way. If a man could pick how he was to be remembered, I would have many choices. Husband, Father, Grandfather, Patriot, Soldier, Police Officer, Student, Instructor, Author, PhD - it¿s been a full life. I think these all would be encompassed in this final category. The one I would choose to be remembered as. I would be honored if it was said that in the battle between good and evil, he was a¿ WARRIOR!
