Leroy's Story
After graduating from Cass I attended James Madison College at Michigan State University (1972-1977). Afterward I went to Wayne State University Law School. I graduated in 1980. After one year working for Central Kentucky Legal Services in Lexington, Kentucky I returned to Dettroit and worked at the Juvenile Defender Office representing juveniles in delinquency and abuse/ neglect cases. My last job of 35 years was with the Federal Defender Office, first as an appellate attorney and then as a trial lawyer. , and terrorism (see USA v Karim Koubriti, and the "Underwear Bomber"). I also had three death penalty cases, all of which were settled by guilty pleas (a victory in the world of criminal defense).
I've been married and divorced twice.. I have a beautiful 35 year old daughter with whom I have a great relationship with.
As a retiree (really since 1997), I've been researching my family history and I'm writing a book about one intriguing ancestor, Pierre Carmouche (1861-1921), the son of a freeman of color from New Orleans and a woman once enslaved on an Ascension Parish plantation. Carmouche was the subject of another book, Degrees of Freedom,
