Lester's Story
Les Greenup So Far
Looking back since high school, there have been lots of ups and downs, but WOW, did things turn out !! What a great big bowl of cherries my life has become.
At the end of my not so wonderful twelve years in the Southgate school system, I wondered like so many others: ÿwhich plant am I going to get into ?ÿ Then a wonderful thing happened to me; I got drafted. I quickly entered college only to stay out of the war. It would pay off amazingly in my life to come, although Iÿve been deeply haunted by the guilt of not going when so many others did.
I had a bit of a personality change at college. People didnÿt poke fun at the kid who was too tall. Nobody picked on me. Girls smiled back. I discovered just how much fun life should be. I finished a degree at HFCC and joined American Motors as a lab technician. After three years, I was at Ford. Thirty-two years later I retired as a supervisor of the Ford Climate Control Test Laboratory.
Along the way I married and had a child. Soon thereafter we divorced for no particularly good reason except my immaturity. I married again to a wonderful woman I met years later and we have had three more children. We honeymooned in Switzerland and have traveled continuously ever since. The three youngest kids are in or finishing college and will soon be on their own. My oldest is on her own and living happily ever after. I am looking forward to grandchildren, but the kids decide things like that for me now.
Going to HFCC opened my eyes; the people were so different here than where I grew up. After my divorce I moved to Dearborn and for thirty years itÿs been wonderful. The kids breezed through school and were accepted at every college they applied; their peer-pressure was so different than mine.

eekends. My kids love the woods and swim like trout. Now that we are both retired, we intend to live there six months and the winters in Florida. We bought a beach front condo in Clearwater several years ago when they were affordable. Walking the shore, looking for dolphins and watching the sun go down over the Gulf of Mexico is a daily ritual. Sadly, the Dearborn house will have to go on the market when things improve.
Probably my biggest interest now is travel. My wife and I ( and always with the kids ) traveled every chance we got. By the time my kids got into high school, they had been to thirty one states, nine provinces, and seven countries. In recent years we do a cruise a year, travel on a road trip somewhere plus the usual up to the cottage and down to the condo. The photo in my profile was last year in Russia. We just love it.
I also dabble in woodworking, although my wife calls it tool collecting. Ebay has been fun, as well as photography, landscaping, and banging on this computer too often. We go walking daily at the mall for an hour, bicycles at the park when it is nice. I feel the need to get an old car or two just to drive what I couldnÿt afford way back when.
Life has been wonderful. My health is good, no maintenance drugs, no operations. Just a great big bowl of cherries.
Well, here it is 2016. We sold Dearborn, sold the beach condo. We rebuilt the cottage on the lake into a nice year around house, and bought a really nice place in Tampa Bay. We still go back and forth to Michigan depending on the season. We continue to travel. A tour of China, Alaska, a recent Panama canal cruise through to California, Black Sea cruise to places I never heard of, and a cruise around Italy. We try to visit Europe every couple of years, this year was Ireland.
All kids are well established in their careers and do their best to out-travel us. Two new grandchildren delight us. Our heath continues to be good.
