Lesa's Story

After I graduated from high school, I was accepted into the Physician Assistant program at Alderson-Broaddus College. I graduated there in 1995, married Darren Simpson in 1996 and moved to a portion of my grandparents' farm. Overall, life was good with some major bumps along the way, including the death of my mother-in law at a very young age. This was a very difficult time for Darren, as well as all who knew his mom. She was a wonderful woman. With all of the strain and ignorance on our part as a young couple, we grew apart and our marriage sadly ended in 2000. We had no children. My career as a Physician Assistant has been very fulfilling for me, spending the first 5 years in rural family medicine and later finding my special niche' in psychiatry. Gaining experience in a community mental health center lead me to my current job at West Virginia University Student Health Service, Mental Health. I practice with a team of three psychiatrists and one family physician who now practices psychiatry full-time. They are the most wonderful nurturing group I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I am so blessed. In November 2006, I was a recipient of the "Best in Class" award given by the National Coal and Energy Coalition. I was one of very few providers chosen to receive this award. Diligence in treating patients and their families in the coal industry most cost effectively was the basis for this award. I was the only PA-C among seven other physicians to receive this award at WVU. There were other providers chosen throughout the state. A ceremony was held for us at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center where I work. I have taken my recertification board exams for the third time this year, passing despite little preparation due to my father's illness. My dad, Ron, was finally diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in February 2008, resulting in death just two months later. It was so difficult dealing with a diagnosis of that magnitude and losing the battle in just a matter of weeks. One of the hardest thing...Expand for more
s is losing a parent, especially when their time here ends at such a young age. He was 61. He had been retired for nearly a year before his passing. On a better note, I have had the opportunity to be a contributing author for a book titled, "Anxiety Disorders - A Pocket Guide for Primary Care" ISBN: 978-1-58829-923-9...just in case you know someone that would be interested in purchasing one. :-) It was published this January 2008. I am also trying to get an invention on the market, which could take as long as two years...I keep praying it will be a successful venture! I embrace life and live it to the fullest every day. I helped start our Red Hat Society chapter, which has grown over the past 4 years. We are "Hunnies with Hattitude!" I have also taken up quilting this past year in addition to scrapbooking, photography, biking, traveling and anything else that peaks my interest. I still see Laura Mayfield, now Laura Mazza approximately every other day. I just witnessed the birth of her third child on August 2nd. Jason, her husband, and her three children have been such a blessing to me. Molly Ann (4), Wade Michael (2) and Mallory Lynn (one month) I am "Auntie Lesa" and I spoil them rotten. I am still close to Shawn Sterling, now Shawn Britton, her husband Jeff and their two children. As far as anyone else from our class, I may see them from time to time, but not on a regular basis. I am now a Trustee and Treasurer of our family cemetery (replacing my Dad's position on the board.) I am most excited about the fact that I got my motorcycle endorsement this summer and have purchased my first street bike. It has been a blast taking Sunday afternoon rides wherever the wind takes us. I have not remarried, but enjoying dating for now. The loves of my life are of course my Miniature Dachshund, Jasmine and my Jack Russell Terrier, Harvey...unconditional love at it's finest! I hope that all of you are doing well. I am excited to reunite again at our 20th reunion...can you believe it? See you soon! Lesa
