Leslie's Story

After graduating from Yuma High in 1967 I attended Arizona Western College. Then I obtained a B. A. in Elementary Education from Adams State College. In 1971 I began teaching at Rancho Viejo Elementary School in Yuma. I married Eula Smith in 1972. We got our Masters from NAU in 1976. Jennifer Elaine joined our family in 1975 and Julie Erin was born in 1979. Eula is the Principal of Desert Mesa Elementary School in Yuma. I am retired and have returned to work at Pecan Grove Elementary as a Paraprofessional Librarian. Jennifer is a Special Education Preschool Teacher at Rolle School in Yuma. Jenn has two boys, Jesi (born in 2003) and Zachary (born in 2008). Julie is a special education teacher at Alice Byrne School in Yuma working with autistic students. Julie married Harvey Quinn on December 12, 2009. Harvey is a heavy equipment operator at Yuma Proving Grounds. I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. it turns out, they were right. To blow off steam, I sit down at the piano and play for half an hour or so. When i am finished life is great. I always expected to have sons probably because I have only brothers. The Lord surprised me with two wonderful daughters, and I wouldn't have it any other way. They have provided joy and enjoyment beyond all measure for 33 years now. Now I have two super grandsons, Jesi is 6 and Zac is 1. What a serandipity!!! I My kids have taught me that life is not as big a deal as I thought. I might as well relax and enjoy life with my family and friends. At ASC I lived in a dorm. Elias Martinez was my roommate. He had never seen snow, because he grew up in the desert. When it snowed the first time, we had a blast. First we made snow cones. Then we played in the snow on the football field until our feet and hands were numb. Then we drove around and skidded through a traffic light before I figured out how to drive in snow. What a funny day!!!
