Leslie's Story

Life Update: 12/31/09: I moved back to Massachusetts (again) in 9/08. I convinced Dell management to let me move back to earth and work remotely. I was NOT a good fit for Texas! Shortly after my return, I switched jobs to work in Supply Chain at Staples. I bought my first house in June of 2009, just five doors down from my best friend and her family. While in Texas, I lost Murray (Lola's [aka Macy] paramour) to liver cancer. I'd been thinking we both needed a new companion kitty, and ended up taking two home from the shelter: Leo (11) and Clyde (2). They're still working things out. I just moved to Texas after returning to Massachusetts nine years ago. Prior to that, I spent seven years in Northern California. But nothing beats the Northeast during Autumn! I spend my free time playing softball, flag football, skiing and wine tasting. I'm trying to get back into horseback riding, but I'm still a bit gunshy after a riding accident back in 1996. Since I was two years old, I was certain that I never wanted to have children-- that conviction has never wavered: I have not, and will not, reproduce! School I grew up in a tiny town in upstate New York: Amsterdam. I attended the only public highschool in Amsterdam: Wilbur H. Lynch. Midway through my senior year, the new highschool opened, essentially nameless: The New Amsterdam Highschool. College I went to Michigan State University. Originally, I intended to become a chemical engineer. Then a civil engineer. Then my major was engineering arts. I wasn't accepted into the College of Engineering, and found myself with six hours to declare a major. My parents insisted I return to New York (and a SUNY) if I wanted to pursue the pshychology courses that interested me. I had to find something that MSU uniquely provided. I settled on mass psychology: Advertising. MSU has one of the top two programs in the country. I enjoyed the classes, but didn't see myself in the industry. I delayed my entry into the real world when I was accept...Expand for more
ed into the Advertising graduate program at State during the middle of my senior year. During my final undergrad Spring term, I took a recommended elective: "Intro to Packaging". I'd heard it was easy. and interesting. and easy. --perfect for Spring term! By the second class, I knew that I'd found my calling. I dropped out of my graduate school registration, and reapplied for a second bachelor's degree. One academic year later, I graduated with my (second) bachelor's degree in packaging. I have worked in the packaging industry ever since. My current position is the first that I've really been asked to call upon my Advertising degree at all. Workplace My professional career has always been in packaging engineering. I first worked at Wang Laboratories (computer manufacturer) in Lowell, MA. I was briefly at StorageTek in Louisville, CO. I HATED Colorado. People don't realize how flat most of the state (ie, where people actually live and work, rather than vacation) really is. Apple Computer had a copy of my resume, and started hunting for me. They caught with me at StorageTek after I'd been there only a month and a half. I was working there before the end of the year at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, CA. After seven years, I thought that I was homesick for the Northeast. I got a job with Bose Corporation, and discovered that I wasn't homesick after all. By my second day at Bose, I knew I'd made a horrible mistake-- but with my choice of company, not it's location. I refer to those five years as the time I had to serve working for nazis. I'm free now, and love my job at Syratech Corp. in East Boston. I was the captain of the Adirondack women's rugby team in the 1983 Empire State Games. We won the silver medal that year. My first job was at Amsterdam Recreation Commission, where I got paid $3 per game to keep score for boys' baseball. What I remember most about it is warming up the pitchers each inning, since it seemed as though the catcher was always the last batter..
