Leslie (Sklar)'s Story

I attended Long Beach Poly and graduated in 1956. My later education was at UCLA (Mathematics, with highest honors in 1964 after having 2 of my 3 children) and USC (MS in Gerontology at age 39 and PhD, Biometry/biostatistics at age 42). I married at 18 after 2 yrs at UCLA and put my husband, Saul Bernstein, through medical school at UC San Francisco. Then we moved to Van Nuys while Saul did his residency at Los Angeles County Hospital. After this, we moved around the US courtesy of the US Army. Next, we moved to Sheffield England where Saul did a fellowship and then we resettled in Sherman Oaks in 1970. When our 3 children were old enough to manage on their own i went back to school. After receiving my PhD, I conducted research and taught at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and USC Keck School of Medicine for nearly 30 years. My research has focused on the etiology of breast and other women's cancers and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. At USC, I served as Dean for Faculty Affairs at the medical school and then as Vice Provost for Medical Affairs at the University. I moved my research program to City of Hope National Medical Center and ...Expand for more
Comprehensive Cancer Center/Beckman Research Institute in 2007. I am a Professor and created the Division of Cancer Etiology.. I was also the Dean for Faculty Affairs at City of Hope. My beloved husband Saul died in April 2010 - we had been married for nearly 52 years. I continue to work full time - and since I love what i do, and City of Hope loves having me there, I am not anticipating retiring soon. In fact, although I moved to Highland Park, New Jersey in 2019 to live close to my daughter, City of Hope has allowed me to work from home (even prior to Covid). I have 11 grandchildren (iwho, as of 2021,, range in age from 21 to 29 yrs). Most live on the east coast, 4 are married, and i have 2 grreat grandchildren who live in the same town I do. My sons are physicians and my daughter takes care of "the world" - including me as I have difficulty walking now due to spinal cord damage. Any day you can find me working, writing research manuscripts, mentoring colleagues throughout the world. I'm 82 now and expect i will retire some day -- maybe at 85 since i still have 3 yrs on my employment contract with City of Hope.. Leslie Bernstein
