Leslie's Story
Life
I've been married since 1973. We both work in the Southern Tier, NY. We have three children, but lost our oldest in 2006 at age 26 in a car accident. He left us a granddaughter we see regularly, she's three. Our other children are John, who was born in 1984 and Katie in 1986. Both graduated from college in May, and are working full time in Western NY.
I work full time as an Assistant County Attorney, prosecuting child abuse in Family Court...yes, I snatch kids from neglectful parents...or facilitate that process. My husband is the director of a college library. I have years before retirement...but still love my job, most days. We enjoy gardening. I do the flowers, he does the vegetables. We are also active in community and volunteer activities: I especially am active in the United Methodist Church and am director of a community foundation. I also quilt and paint...for fun. Not a huge amount of talent, LOL! I feel lucky to have had a great high school education at Brockport. Happy to hear from classmates.
College
I attended SUNY Geneseo from 1969 to 73...remember the cancellation of finals during the spring of 1970 when students were protesting the war everywhere? Candlelight march on the Armory? What a tim...Expand for more
e to be in college! I spent my junior year in England, at the Consortium Year at Nottingham...a wonderful experience, with my best friend Sharon Van Dusen. She married England, and still lives there. She and her husband recently bought a summer place in the Catskills I look forward to visiting.
I live 45 minutes south of Geneseo, and meet my sister CArol or my daughter Katie, both of whom live in Rochester there often, as a half way point, shop there periodically. Actually, I currently visit at least once a month as my orthodontist is there...yes mine, for the second time. Long story.
After a year off...and marrying David Haggstrom, we headed to Buffalo...me to law school, he to library school, where we got our graduate degrees. Yes, law school is a miserable as they say. Being married at least gave my life some normalcy. UB has an excellent program with lots of clinical opportunities. I directed the Buffalo Legislation Project, which is since gone...we wrote legislation for everyone from the city council to the NY State Assembly. It was interesting work. I had a judicial clerkship while a student, also interesting. But in the end, I decided to practice in the country, where my husband grew up. Never have regretted it.
