Leslie's Story

Life Sit down for a spell and get comfortable – this is what I’ve done over the past twenty years. 1985-worked at McDonalds in Callaway until Thanksgiving. Moved to Cocoa Beach to live with grandparents. 1986-Auditioned for Disney and was hired to dance in a parade. Moved to Orlando. 1987-Worked at Disney during Easter, summer, and winter. 1988–Worked at Disney during the Easter season. Also worked for Sheraton hotels. 1988-1990-Air Force-please click on the tab above..... 1991-Moved back to my mom's. 1992-1993-1994-1995–Attending part time college by night; worked a variety of odd jobs by day: substitute teacher, cahier at Publix, Call Center Operator, secretary, hostess at the Outback Steakhouse, receptionist at a stock broker’s office, and a summer day camp counselor for the County Parks and Recreation. Because I was always working and going out late at night, I got quite good at line dancing. I started teaching at a local country bar and had tons of fun doing that. 1995-Summer–Moved to Nashville; worked for Ticketmaster and a medical insurance office by day and the Outback Steakhouse by night. I made some good connections in the video business and then…..my car got repossessed. 1995–Fall-moved back to Orlando to stay with a friend. I needed a job that didn’t need a car. I contacted an acquaintance who worked in the cruise ship business in Port Canaveral and it led to a job with Premier Cruise Lines. I worked as a Warner Brothers costume character for 5 months until I tore up my knee and had surgery. 1996–April–Applied for and was hired by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. Worked for over a year on the Entertainment staff. We were responsible for bingo, team trivia, pool Olympics, karaoke, line dancing, theme nights, movie nights, and other social activities. We were Vanna White and Julie McCoy all wrapped in one. I met over a thousand people a week. Traveled to the Caribbean, south Florida, the Bahamas, southern California, and Baja Mexico. It was lots of fun and I became a very “social” person!!! I did not know this side of my self!! In high school, I thought I was a social wall flower, petrified to even speak to (gasp!) cute guys!! I broke myself of that fear rather quickly! But I can say for sure I never imagined myself in this job – getting paid to socialize and travel!! In 1996 my grandmother died while I was on a break in between ships and I was able to be with my family. 1997-I joined Celebrity Cruises and went to Alaska, the California coast, and the Panama Canal, and worked in the same job as I did on Royal Caribbean. Also traveled to St. Thomas, St. John, Martinique, Antigua, Barbados, Aruba, Belize, and Honduras. 1998–Went back to my grandparents’ house and back to college. 1999–June-I got a call from a cruise line to be a Social Hostess/Onboard Wedding coordinator. Went to the Bahamas and Key West. 1999–November–Moved to Ft. Lauderdale for a job with a magazine publishing company. Job perk: cruise ship travel! I really enjoyed this job. Had two female bosses who were always arguing with each other. Realize just how much I missed being at sea full-time and how much I hated my arguing bosses. Made some phone calls to some contacts and inquired about a job I had my eye on since 1997–on a ship that went to Europe. They had 3 openings, I gave my notice, and one month later I was in Rome. 2000–October-Arrived in Rome to join Renaissance Cruise Line. Wrote, edited, and printed the daily program that announces the next day’s activities. During the day I was in front of a computer; by night myself and two other people on the staff hosted activities but not to the scale that other big ships did. Continued in the "school" section here..... please go to the "school" section...... School Continued from "Life" section..... This was on Renaissance Cruise Line with only 700 passengers – it was a 5-star luxury line that catered to Americans with money and with time to spare! Our cruises were 15-days in length and all our departures were from somewhere in Europe. After one year away, which included a short vacation at home and a 3-week stay in Amsterdam, I went to a new ship in a new job with the Tour Department. We answered questions about tours that passengers could take in all of our destinations and we sold tickets for the tours. Ninety percent of the time I was also on a tour because I would go as an ‘escort.’ I traveled to Italy, France, Spain, England, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Morocco, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, and Ukraine. My third day back from vacation and my third day in my new job was September 11, 2001. We were in Belgium. It was surreal. We were able to complete our cruise (we were on the 10th or 11th day) but we were in limbo for about 5 days because no one could leave (all flights were cancelled) and we couldn’t send off our old passengers nor collect any new ones. People were canceling their cruises left and right. We completely understood, but we also had a business to run. It didn’t take long for our company to file bankruptcy. We finally got our passengers on planes to the U.S. By law, a bankrupt cruise ship belongs to the country where it belongs financially. In our case, France. But with our bankruptcy, nobody wanted us to dock in their port because they were afraid they wouldn’t get paid (for port fees). We floated around the Mediterranean for about 20 days until finally Gibraltar let us in. We remained in Gibraltar for another 2 weeks. It was bittersweet – we were still getting paid, we had free internet, we didn’t have to “work”, and we had no passengers! But our jobs were over and we didn’t know what we’d end up with (we got a plane tic...Expand for more
ket home and one-month severance pay). We didn’t know if this company would regroup or what. But we always thought about New York City when we were feeling blue and realized we didn’t really have the right to feel sorry for ourselves. 2001–October/November-Finally got back to the U.S. and I went to my mom’s in Cocoa Beach. 2002–I lived at my mom’s for the entire year and graduated in December that year with the much-anticipated A.A. (see the photo marked “Then”). 2003–January–Moved to Orlando to attend Rollins College – a private college in Winter Park (a small city at the Orlando city limits). I’m in the evening degree program that most other adults/moms/dads/un-typical college students attend. I went there for one semester. 2003–June– I answered a newspaper ad for a “computer instructor on a cruise ship” – to teach Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, etc). I had never done this before but was confident that with my computer skills, I was going to be just fine. I thought this was a good enough reason to skip one semester of college. I created the computer courses (it was a pilot program) and accepted the job. I joined Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and flew to Alaska to join the “Norwegian Sun” for a six-month contract. It was a much-enjoyed return to Alaska, coastal California, and the Panama Canal. In October 2003 my mother had a bad fall in the kitchen and I took a week off to see her. I also used this time to look for a different cruise line to work on because I wasn’t happy with how NCL treated me and how my contract with them was not followed (they said one thing but delivered something different). 2003 – October - I joined Princess Cruise Lines to do the same job as on NCL and had a wonderful, wonderful time. I traveled to the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, and Cozumel, Mexico. Continued in the "workplace" section... please go to that section for more... College 1986: Brevard Community College one semester 1987: University of Central Florida one semester but did not complete 1990: summer courses in South Dakota through military 1991: Valencia Community College one semester 1998-1999 Brevard Community College full academic year: Computer Graphics and other computer applications 2002: Brevard Community College full academic year; graduated December 2002 2003: Rollins College one semester; Organizational Communication major. 2004: Rollins College spring and fall; Organizational Communication major. 2005: Rollins College spring and fall; should be finished at end of December 2005; Organizational Communication major. Workplace Continued from "School" section...... 2004 – January - I went back to Orlando and back to college. I’ve been here ever since and am currently enrolling for my final semester. I’ll be here for the fall and I’m currently contemplating and applying for an internship in Washington, D.C. for the spring semester. My major is Organizational Communication. I used to think I wanted to be in H.R. or training and development, or be an entertainment manager at Disney. Now I am thinking of media/tv/radio/events/PR. Curently - I’ve been working at Disney since last May. One of the fun perks is taking my nieces and nephews in for free. So, what does the future hold? Perhaps graduate school, perhaps moving away from Orlando, perhaps a different job at Disney. And I’m still holding out hope for finding that “one” right guy and getting married. So, that’s it – hope you enjoyed – keep in touch and God Bless. Would love to hear from you all. Military Air Force Brat: other schools listed here are due to our constantly moving around. Attended 8th and 9th grade at J.E.J.Moore Junior High School in Prince George, Virginia - I think it is now a High School. We were stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia. Attended 6th and 7th grade at Izmir American High School in Izmir, Turkey. Loved it. Attended Rutherford High School from 1982-1985. Stationed at Tyndall AFB and lived in Callaway (Panama City area). Graduated in 1985. No further military association until I became enlisted myself. 1988-My mom kept pestering me to join the Air Force because of the benefits, educational opportunities, and travel. I took the ASVAB, and got my second choice: Administrative Specialist. The first day of basic training was December 13th, 1988. I'll never forget that day for the rest of my life!!! I can still picture it in my mind - I was wearing a new pair of jeans and a yellow sweater and deck shoes. They made us dump our suitcases hunting for contraband! like makeup and chocolate! Basic training was sort-of fun, though, except for cleaning the bathroom floors with toothbrushes. My favorite part was the obstacle course. I went to technical school in Biloxi and graduated at the top of my class. I got through a 6-week course in 3 weeks. I went to South Dakota for the rest of my service (1989, 1990) and really enjoyed it. I saw Wyoming and Colorado and went skiing for the first time. I worked in the Publications Warehouse and I was responsible for entering people's order into a computer then going into a warehouse to get it. Later I worked in the Publications Library and helped people learn how to write a new publication or make a draft. Then I also worked in the BITC - Base Information Transfer Center - or, mail delivery. I also got in trouble for being late to work too often. I got out with an Administrative Discharge (Under Honorable Conditions) when they had the roll-backs with the first Pres. Bush. My last day in the military was December 26, 1990. After I got out and through early 1991, I stayed in South Dakota for a little bit, then came back to Orlando and got my old job back at Disney and went to a local community college.
