Lester's Story

Life Lester McCarroll, Jr. is President and CEO of The McCarroll Group, founded in June of 2003. The McCarroll Group creates and seeks ideas that enhance urban lifestyles through technology, and helps individuals and companies create new revenue streams from these ideas. Of particular interest are six lifestyle spaces: how we educate ourselves, how we entertain ourselves, how we stay connected, how we serve the community, how we worship, and how we build business capability and human capital. The application of new technologies to these lifestyles enables new, practical services for consumers and businesses. Lester and his associates “connect the dots” between the technology roadmap, business models, strategy and marketing initiatives and trends, product planning, and a global network of people and companies to bring these new ideas to market. The Group’s ventures include NuFace Entertainment, an entertainment marketing and technology platform company; The Technology Consortium Group, an information technology and services concern; and T3Y, a new apparel brand being launched later in the spring of 2005. Other Group projects are building businesses from new wireless solutions tuned for entertainment, video gaming features to facilitate player development in professional sports, new executive coaching approaches, and advertising networks for creating buzz for new products in urban areas. A former Vice President at Motorola, Lester impacted the company in a number of fundamental areas: • Guided development of a structured approach to insuring that country management and government relations around the world were positioned to deliver on the issues most critical to each of the businesses and maximize Motorola’s return from financial incentives in each country. • Orchestrated the iDEN product portfolio and development process to include wireless packet data capabilities for Nextel, small systems offerings for emerging markets, and other features to prese...Expand for more
rve and enhance the value of Nextel’s push-to-talk capabilities – a key point of differentiation for the carrier. • Led initiative in 1999 to improve how Motorola businesses select customer market segments, prioritize product portfolio programs, determine which messages, products, solutions, and services it will take to the marketplace, and how resources will be allocated to execute. These Market and Product Line Planning capabilities (MPP) were used by the businesses to intelligently prune their portfolio and return the company to profitability. • Managed the improvement of software engineering maturity in Motorola’s two-way radio systems divisions in the mid-90s necessary for the survival and growth of iDEN and private systems-based businesses. • Co-led a nationwide membership to strengthen preference for the Motorola brand and product portfolio, fortify relationships between Motorola’s leadership and key Black organizations and influential figures, strengthen the pipeline to Black talent, and improve the potential of success for Black employees -- as a founding Chairperson of the Black Business Council. Lester started his career at AT&T Bell Laboratories at the age of 15 as a summer intern. After receiving degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1983 and Stanford University in 1984, he rejoined Bell Labs, leading development of various digital services systems and features prior to joining Motorola in 1994. He is involved in a number of community activities to balance out his professional contributions. Lester is currently on the board of the Southside/Wabash YMCA in Chicago and the Leadership Advisory Council of the Art Institute. He served on the Executive Committee of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. (GEM) from 2000 to 2003. He is currently forming a Technology Advisory Board for the new Harold Washington Cultural Center in the historic Bronzevill
