Lhasa's Story

Hello... Hello to everyone who does not remember me, because Lhasa Kivan is my alias at this point. But I remember most of you and often wonder how Y'all have faired. After graduation I traveled the entire west coast from Big Sur, the northern Cali coast, Oregon, lived in Washington State 2 years helped build a house in the country from the ground up, moved to Canada, lived & worked in British Columbia, worked on fishing ships in Kodiak Alaska, I worked the seasons as a reforestation-forest-laborer, forest fire prevention, worked fire lines from Alaska-Canada-Washingtion & Oregon. I moved back to Napa Valley, went to University of San Francisco State majored psychology, towards MSW specializing in youth advocacy. For specific personal reasons I dropped out of formal classes in this field of human behavior, child & criminal psychology, cultural & anthropological studies in various cultures. I was amorphous career wise doing everything from teaching special needs children & adults, all the while working in fields-orchards-farms, volunteering at ashrams, painting house exteriors, taught some classes at Sur La Table in the late 90' & 2000's, light community volunteering; all the while living in Saint Helena & Yountville in Napa Valley. After a 4 decade career I now return to help watch a 92 year old mother. I've been in San Francisco living in the house I came to this country in. City life is very different than country and Valley life. I'm afraid I'm unaccustomed to city folk, the population density, noise of cars, the homeless, motorcycles, yelling, jet planes, sirens, law enforcement, aggressive negative people, tourists, litter, opportunistic crime. Back then in 1972 there was only one car in the driveway or garage and free parking err-where; sadly now cars are on sidewalks and parking space is competitive. In 1971 minimum wage was $1.4 5an hour until Pres. Gerald Ford raised minimum wage to $2.50 an hour. A loaf of Sun...Expand for more
beam or Wonder bread was 0.35 cents, snicker bars were 0.5 cents, popsicle trucks played music selling .15-.25cent missile popsicles, school cafeterias served beef tongue and rice with green beans on Wednesdays and meatloaf with mashers and gravy on Thursdays then on Fridays served Mystery Fish or Tuna Salad Sandwiches for .75 cents. Yet the city is a melting pot of cultures and eateries now. Not the fancy places but the neighborhood small businesses representing their countries of origin from the Ukraine, Hong Kong, Oaxaca, Argentina, Thailand, 'Merica, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Viet Nam, Bagels in Berkeley, BBQ's, Burritos, Donuts, Boho eateries, hidden parks, Dungeness Crabs, Pizza and Pizza, The Mission, The Outer Richmond, parts of the Sunset to eat, The 3 Chinatowns and 3 or 4 Farmers Markets, North Beach Golden Boi's Pizza, Dim Sum and Den Sum on Clement or Third streets, Asian Art Museum, Kite Day on the Marina Greens, The Carousel in GGP, The Archery Field by the Beach Flax's & Michaels art Supplies and the one on Union St. and the Academy of Sciences is just awesome. I hope that you all have done well. I am wondering if I should endeavour to meet Y'all. I have walked by the old Bal Campus, it breaks my heart that very little has changed, where does all the money go from the city budget to make campuses conducive to learning in updated environs? I do remember two sisters in particular Renalla & especially Avalon Anderson, Karen who was in my homeroom. I remember Ms. Kip, Ms. Jung, Mr. Burgoa, Mr, Hafvendahl, Ms. McCormick & Mrs. Sullivan the art teachers, Mr. Justin, Ms. Terheyden and of course Mr. Hummel our Chemistry 1 & 2 and Organic teacher, Mdme. Sapone my French advance classes ... I remember everyones faces I suppose and most your names, some names I recall but no face comes to thought. I hope to be moving back to Saint Helena by the end of this year. Hope to meet you soon, maybe... Namaskaram Lhasa Kivan
