Lillian's Story

Life I was born at Grandview Hospital in Edinburg and grew up in the best city of Rio Grande Valley. You have no idea how proud I am to say that I am from the southern plaines of South Texas. I went to Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from there in l964. The Edinburg Bobcats then made a special place in my heart after that and High School was not work at all...it was just plain fun! The Sergeanettes were my all for the 3 years I was there. In 1967 we moved to Grandview, Washington. There I did my Senior year and finished High School in 1968. That was the hardest year of my life. In 1970, I moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington. I married my husband my Sophmore year in college and we're still married. He received his degree in Political Science ( can you imagine our political discussions?) and went back to Yakima Valley, but I stayed one more year at the Gynecorps Women's Training Program at the University School of Medicine. I have been a Physician's Assistant since 1976 and am still practicing Women's Health Care. I do Gynecology and Obstetrics. I have three children...ages 27, 25 and 17. We live on a farm and enjoy the quiet and the hills around us. I'll be very happy to hear from anyone, even if it's to drop by for some Texan hospitality. School I am one of those kids that was sent to Catholic School from the very begining. We were a close network, and stuck together until our Freshman year in High School. I went to Sacred Heart School with people like Armando Alonzo, Gracie Benavidez, Sandra Benitez, Lupita Cantu, Carl David Estrada, David Chapa, Yoli Garza, Kiko Barrientez, Imelda and Tommy Hinojosa, Consuelo Salazar, Bobby Obregon, Rolando Munoz, Richard Navarro...One of my best teachers was Ms. Obregon and Sister Mary Reynaldo. Remember Turkey? There was also Father Teofilo and all the Sisters of Mercy. The Eigth Grade was our ultimate goal and graduation was all we aimed for. Who would be the one to crown the Virgin Mary in the month of May...and what about the Halloween Horrow House that we were in charge of as eigth graders! The last time I was back home in Edinburg, I went to Mass at Sacred Heart for daily Mass and after the celebration, I went up those stairs to the old choir balcony. Everything just about looked as I remembered it. All of the...Expand for more
se memories are so close to my heart, even though I am across the country. College After graduating from Grandview High School in 1968, I settled down and worked for several years in order to save money for school. I was accepted at the University of Washington and I could only take the hectic life of the University and the city 9 months of the year. In the summers, I would come back to Grandview and I worked for the clinic in Toppenish working of their mobile unit doing elementary medical screening as part of their preventive medicine. I attended a Women's Training Program through the University of Washington Medical School and graduated as a Physician Assistant specialing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. I have been doing that since 1976. I love doing Obstetrics and listening to fetal heart tones all day long and I also love to do annual exams and problem patients because every single patient is like a puzzle. I love the solving aspect of medicine. Workplace Sometimes I get a puzzled look from people when I introduce myself as a Physician Assistant. What does a PA do? It is a very special field because I specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology. I love Obstetrics, and it's not just listening to babies heart beats all day long...it's being on your toes and knowing what to do with a pregnant woman who is diabetic...a pregnancy that has a positive Down Syndrome and the woman is preparing for this birth...a pregant woman who has a positive drug screen...the pregnant married woman who got pregnant through a rape and plans on relinquishing the baby...what about the woman who comes in for a simple annual exam and we find a breast lump that requires a breast work-up with core biopsy and having to hold her hand all through this...or the woman that comes in for her regular annual exam and her Pap smear reveals a sexually tranmitted virus for which there is no cure...or the woman who has an abnormal Pap Smear and needs Colposcopy and biopsies to rule our cervical cancer...or the woman who feel her uterus is falling out and needs surgery for intervention and also need to have her bladder evaluated for incontinence...this is what may regular day looks like. All these puzzles and I love to put them together. I have been a PA since 1976 and plan to keep working until I retire sometime in the near future.
