Linda's Story

Life I moved back to Aurora in 2003 after living in Oklahoma for 28 years . . . and yes, I still have that southern accent. After just a year in Aurora, I met a guy I knew 50 years ago. We grew up in the same neighborhood. I lived in the 1700 block of Galena. On July 24, 2004, I married Don Cox. Don sold his house and I sold mine and together we bought our house. We now live in southeast Aurora and just marvel at how much everything has changed. Although I retired from IBM in 1993, I am still working and am a computer technology analyst for LandAmerica Financial Group. They are a holding company for several big title insurance companies thoughout the US. Don retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in 2002 and is working part-time at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science as a security guard. We are looking forward to the 45th Year Class reunion in 2006. 04/17/2013 - Gee I cannot believe it has been so long since I wrote this life history. But life does go on! I was laid off from Land America in 2007 and they have since closed their doors after 130 years in business. I decided then to retire and draw my SSI. Only being retired was just too boring for me so I started volunteering at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science (the one at City Park). The volunteer job led to a part-time position in Guest Services which I love. I work 3-4 days a week which is just perfect to keep me from getting bored. In 2012, we sold our home in SE Aurora and moved to Heather Gardens (also in SE Aurora). HG is an adult community with a beautiful 9 hole golf course, restaurant, club house with lots of ...Expand for more
activities. I took up golf 4 years ago and just love the game. I cannot believe I waited so long to enjoy something that provides exercise, companionship with friends, and, of course, frustration! We enjoy the life-style change and not have to worry about mowing the grass, shoveling the snow or painting the outside of the house - Assisted Living at its best! January 2021 - Happy New Year Classmates! I don't know about you but I, for one, am glad 2020 is over! What a year! Don and I are still living at Heather Gardens and enjoying what little we can. COVID-19 has locked down most activities. Like most every "senior citizen" we have been hunkered down since March and try to be creative with in-home activities! I retired from DMNS in 2014 and thoroughly enjoy the retirement years! Don was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in July so now my life has taken on the "care giver" role. I still find time to play a round of golf weather permitting and enjoy playing bridge. Only now, I have to play online which is not the same as playing with a group. However, it does help to keep the brain sharp! In addition, after retiring, I took up Creative Glass work and do fused glass. However, I have to rely on the kiln in the HG Clubhouse which closes every time there is a spike in COVID. Because we are a senior community, HG is under the same health guidelines as assisted living places. I am tired of cooking so many meals - 365 meals in one month is too much! LOL I hope and pray that all of you are staying well and healthy during this pandemic! Remember this, too, shall pass. Have a Happy and Healthy New Year!
