Linda's Story

Life - February 10, 2010 - Time for a new update. Bob and I just celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary. It is wonderful to be still in love with my high school sweetheart. We continue to live in snow country in upper central New York State. Our zoo is now smaller with 2 large rescued dogs, and one iguana. Our cat and my beautiful beloved iguana girl (as shown in the above photo) have both crossed The Rainbow Bridge. She was my first iguana rescue and honored me with her friendship for twelve years before the neglect and abuse of her first years of life could no longer be overcome. The Giant Green Iguana I rescued in 2004, a pitiful neglected abused two year old male; is now a thriving magnificent 7 1/2 year old, over 12 pounds and almost 6 foot. With care my iguanas have not only become beautiful creatures, they have shown me they are highly intelligent. They interact with our family, love to be included in our activities including traveling within the US with us. This being said, one must always remember they are wild creatures and will be forever wild ... depending on whatever circumstances that may be, they can (and often do) revert to their natural instincts. While I dearly love mine and will continue to rescue them, the average person should not consider having one - they are not meant to be domesticated. A person doesn't own an iguana, the iguana owns them; it is the person who adapts themselves for life with a iguana, not the other way around. If anyone would like to know more information about Giant Green Iguanas, please feel free to contact me. Our daughter still lives an hour away and we see her often. We still enjoy living where we are - out in the boonies - far from the maddening crowd. We have everything we need: electricity, a deep well, a house p...Expand for more
hone, C-Band satellite and recently a satellite for internet. Still no cell phone or cable out here and probably never will be. We garden, preserve our own food, co-op and barter. Our hunting land provides well for us. The closest village, Camden NY, has one small grocery store, a few gas stations, a library, two hardware stores and a few restaurants. If you'd like to see our two-block megalopolis, you can easily find webcams online. At home we live plain, quiet and uncomplicated. Bob travels often to England, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Turkey and throughout the continental US for work. I can go with him if I want; putting the dogs in a kennel is no problem but we have to arrange for responsible people to live in our home full time to care for our iguana. Sometimes coordinating schedules for in-home care is a problem. Usually it is easier for us to do our traveling separately; that way one of us is at home. I recently returned from spending January in Ahmedabad, India, located in the north-west about 600 miles from the Pakistan border. I thank God for allowing us to make friends with an Indian family there, where we have become family members. It was not only wonderful to be with them again but it was wonderful to bask in sunshine and temperatures around 80 - so different from an up-state New York winter. If someone reads this profile all the way to the end and is interested, I'd be willing to show you (online) photos of my travels in India; simply contact me. The snow lays on the ground; it is a winter wonderland outside as I update this profile. The seed catalogs are scattered throughout the family room as we dream of warmer sunshine-filled days when we can once again be outside working in the earth. Life Is Good ...
