Linda's Story

Life I've lived in many places around the country. After living and working in Atlanta, Georgia for 10 years (where I was director of the Georgia Library for the Blind & Physically Handicapped), in September 2005, my husband and I moved to the Boston area where I am director of a public library in suburban Boston. We live in a 300 year old house near the west bank of the Charles River. Before that I lived in Colorado, Wyoming, and Indiana. For 15 years I was married to a man who was a quadriplegic. It was from him that I developed an interest in disability issues. We were married in Laramie, Wyoming and divorced in Marietta, Georgia. A few years later I met my husband Jim at the Unitarian Universalist church in Marietta. We're both musicians and have a group called "Two New Moons." Jim plays acoustic guitar and I play the Native American flute. We recorded a CD in 2003. In 1994, while still living in Cheyenne, I ran for the Wyoming House of Representatives. Ran against an incumbent Republican and lost by only 291 votes. The next year I moved to Georgia and found myself living in Newt Gingrich's district! In June 2005, Jim and I rode in the "Bicycle Ride Across Georgia" -- a 435 bike ride across the state in 6 days, in the heat (and humidity) of summer. It was the most physically challenging thing I've ever done. In September 2005, we moved to Millis, MA where I am director of the public library. We're looking forward to doing some rides now that we live here in New England. We've bicycled on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard (rode out to Chappaquidick Island where Teddy drove off the bridge). Millis sits on the west bank of the Charles River, and we often go canoeing in the summer and Fall. It is so beautiful here in the Fall! College Went to WSU for 2 years and then ...Expand for more
transferred to the University of Colorado. I loved Colorado and its beautiful campus and I enjoyed the scenery and weather out there. My first summer in Boulder I worked as a seamtress for the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. I made $500.00 for the entire summer! Those were the days... After graduating from CU I was hired as a District Executive for the Boy Scouts of America. My territory included northern Colorado and southern Wyoming and I was based in Laramie, WY. I loved driving through the countryside, recruiting kids and adults to join the Scouts. But I didn't enjoy some of the fierce snowstorms I got caught in while driving. I was a graduate student at the University of Wymoing for a couple of years, studying geography. Then worked for 5 years at the University of Wyoming library. Decided to get my master's in library science. Got a full scholarship to Indiana University to study library service to people with disaiblities. My time at IU was wonderful and I wish I could have stayed longer. Workplace Today I'm director of the Millis Public Library in Millis, MA. I started in September 2005. In fact, I drove up to MA the day after hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. As I left Atlanta, the gas prices were hitting $6.00 a gallon, and in some places, there was no gas to be had. But, as I drove farther north, the situaiton did improve. Before this, I was director of the Georgia Library for Accessible Services for 10 years. It was a wodnerful and unique job which I loved, but I was getting bored after 10 years in the same place; it was time to move on. I've also worked as a district executive for the Boy Scouts of America, as a photo shop clerk, library assistant, database manager for the Wyoming State Library, and as head of reference for the Cheyenne public library.
