Linda's Story

June 2010 Well, Stan asked me to tell my story, so here's a start. After getting my BSN from SUNYA, I moved to California with another nursing student friend. After 4 years in San Francisco doing hospital nursing, I moved to Mendocino County to work in Public Health. I met my husband, Patrick in Ukiah and we've been married over 30 years now, with 2 children - Brian (26) and Sarah (23). My husband is a teacher but his real love is being a singer/songwriter.(you can sample his music on his nagelations website). We're going to Colorado in August (hence, will not be at the reunion) where he goes each summer to the Rocky Mountain Song School and then a weekend Folks Festival. We camp out in a beautiful area at "Planet Bluegrass" in Lyons. Can't wait! Our son is substitute teaching now, and our daughter will be starting grad school at U of Oregon in Eugene this fall (Italian studies). We all just got back from a weekend camping trip at the coast (MacKerricker State Park, CA) - one of our favorite family vacations over the years. I have been truly blessed to have such a wonderful family! I've been with the County Public Health Dept. all this time - first as a "field" Public Health Nurse (doing a little of everything in a rural county) and the past 22 years as the Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Director. It's been a wonderful job - I get to do countywide needs assessments and then work with community partners/organizations/agencies to develop ways to improve the health of women and children in our county. We've worked on breastfeeding support, perinatal substance abuse prevention, child care health, nutrition and physical activity, teen pregnancy prevention, as well as nurse case management for pregnant and parenting teens to improve health outcomes. I've also been privileged to have just finished a 2 year term as President of MCAH Action - the statewide organization of 61 local MCAH Directors that is very involved with advocacy and works in partnership with the State MCAH Program. For fun...Expand for more
, I still love to sing in the chorus at our local community college. Every few years we are invited to sing at the Mendocino Music Festival's closing concert on the coast. Last year it was one of my favorites - Mozart's Requiem, and this year it will be Carmina Burana - quite a different piece of music! My husband and I are looking forward to retiring the summer of 2011. We want to travel (lots of family and friends across the country) and I want to get back to quilting small projects and knitting again. Well, that's enough for now! September 2012 My husband and I both retired a year ago - well, I tried to retire, but have been doing some part-time work to help out my old colleagues. Still it's ok because I have control over when I am available and what I will do - so that feels much different! Patrick and I have been doing some fun vacationing this year in Colorado, Lake Tahoe and we are soon leaving to attend the Folk Festival in Sisters Oregon before heading up to Boise, Idaho to visits relatives. February 2015 I finally fully retired from "paid" work a year ago. But keep very busy volunteering with local activities in our community, as well as reading, knitting, taking long walks, etc... I love being able to travel more now. Our family had a bit of a reunion at a niece's wedding last Summer in New Brunswick, Canada. And Patrick and I took an amazing Avalon River Cruise in Europe (Switzerland to Vienna) to celebrate our 35th Anniversary last fall...many wonderful sights and met such nice people! Love being able to drive up to Oregon to visit our daughter, who is working as a Study Abroad Advisor/Coordinator at Western Oregon U. Our son has stayed in Ukiah and works at the Mendocino Savings Bank, so we enjoy having one of our kids close by. I still sing in local choruses - will be doing Brahms Requiem at the Mendocino Music Festival in July. Patrick continues to write and record his music at his "home studio," and loves painting (oil) landscapes - so our house is filled with art and music!
