Linda's Story

Life I still live in Michigan. I was married for almost 16 years, but have been divorced for the past 14 years. Never remarried and tend to like being single and set in my ways. I have two children a son 22 and daughter 19. I have many "adopted" children from the students I have taught over the years. They call me "mom" too and are a big part of my life. The extented family is quite large. When anyone askes how many children I have I must ask " The ones I gave birth to or the others?" My hobby for the past 13 years is being a living historian with a Federal (Northern) unit from Lansing, Michigan. We , my children too, spend time recreating the Civil War period and teaching the public about life and war during the 1860's. My hobby has allowed me to stay close to my children and even though they are grown they still reenact with me, spend time with me and even ask me to be an active participant in their lives. I am very lucky because many of my friends with children the same age have little or no connection with their sons and daughters. I also enjoy reading, theatre, concerts, music, sewing (especially sewing and researching period clothing for my hobby), scrapbooking, needle tatting and a bit of quilting. The fact is that I have many interest and little time to persue all at one time. I would love to travel especially to Europe but that is on hold now until my mom no longer depends on me. I am a member of the sandwich generation with my mom living nearby....Expand for more
She is still going strong at age 89 but requiring my attention. She is in very good health for her age but as she grows older she almost becomes childlike in her needs from me, her only child. I have taught vocal music for over 33 yrs in the same school district. Teaching high school and middle school choir, general music and one middle school class of musical theatre keeps me very busy. I retired from teaching in June of 2006 and have been taking some time just to do nothing. It has been the first time in my life I haven't had to have a schedule or take care of anyone but myself. I think I like it! I am thankful that teaching has allowed me to be with my children while they wer growing up and attended school. Both are now taking local college classes and working but still live at home. Looking over what I have written makes my life look pretty boring but that is the truth. I have a quiet little life, in a quiet stuck up little town. My goal now that I am retired is to get my kids out on their own, and move out of the area and into a new life of my own elsewhere. I don't know where just yet but I am not liking the prospects of being everyone's "Old music teacher" in this little town. I still have fond memories of school, choir, church, scouts Rainbow girls and growing up in Southgate. I also look back on my college days at Adrian College and I am very glad I chose a small college. It was a great time and I remember it with great fondness.
