Linda's Story
School
I have been in Maine since 1974. I was married at that time. I have been divorced for many years. I have a daughter who is 25. She is a graduate of Bowdoin College of which I am very proud. I have been employed as a high school art teacher since 1974. My 85 year old mother now lives here in Maine also. She lives in an assisted care facility. I also have a cousin and his family who have been living in Maine for the past 7 years. I love this state for its natural beauty and the high integrity of its people. It almost sounds like I'm talking about a foreign country. Upon entering the Maine via the turnpike there is a large sign that says "Welcome to Maine, the way life should be". That about says it all. The only really, really big hole in my life is not having a significant other. It's been two years since my last relationship. I miss that masculine presence very much. My work as an art teacher is quite consuming. I teach a course called Integrated Arts. It is a combination of art, theater, music and dance. The curriculum gives an historical perspective of the arts through hands on activities. I love the subject matter but there is just way too much information to cover in one semester-yes, believe it or not this is just a one semester course. In many respects I am a work-a-holic. I think it is time to make some changes and to start having fun again. I am 54 years old now and going out to the singles scene does not appeal to me. Underneath my high school yearbook picture it reads - aspiring artist. In truth I want...Expand for more
to pursue the making of art for the rest of my life. I have not done any of my own work yet. Everything creative I do is associated with my classes and students. Teaching has been very fulfilling in many respects.
I would love to have some contact with people from my past. I love Maine but sometimes I do feel disconnected from my own personal history because there is no one here that I can reminisce with. (whoops, ending a sentence with a preposition is a no, no, of which Mrs. Nugent would never approve ). So, to anyone who remembers me please get in touch.
College
I began as a music major - piano was my focus. In my junior year I transferred to the Psychology Dept. continuing to study piano with Mrs. Batchelor. I always lived off campus at the Arena residence on Pennington Rd. All 6 of us had great times together. Sue Sommers, Linda Sweeten, Christine Fedorka, Carolyn Robinson, Linda Kates. (Back in those days Linda was a popular name). One of my best buddies in the Psych Dept was Leonard Gershman.
During my sophmore year I fell in love with Allen Pomerantz. After I graduated we were married. We moved to Maine. After 8 years of marriage and a baby we divorced. I still live in Maine. Ed Wurple one of Allen's frat brothers also lives in Maine with his family.
I have worked as a high school art teacher for the past 29 years. I am now ready to retire from teaching. My daughter Sandra who is 25, a graduate of Bowdoin College, lives in Mass. My 85 year old mother also lives in Maine now. It is a beautiful state.
