Linda's Story

Born in Princeton, New Jersey, I grew up in St. James and Setauket, New York. I married Michael Hancher, a professor of English at the University of MN (retir3d in 2022). After graduating from ELVHS, I attended Douglass College, Rutgers University, and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where I received my MAT, taught junior high school English, and met Michael, who was my advisor. We moved to Minneapolis in 1972, where I did post-graduate work in Special Education I worked for Minneapolis Public Schools Hospital/Agency Program as teacher and program coordinator for 37 years, providing educational services to children and teens in hospitals and treatment programs in Minneapolis. We have one son, Matthew, a computer science/electrical engineer, who attended MIT and now lives in San Francisco and is the lead engineer for Google Earth. He was married in April 2014 to Cary Ann Rosko, a psychotherapist who also sings with several Bay Area opera companies. Linda retired in June 2010, and now enjoys reading, gardening, quilting, hiking and traveling. I still haven't decided what I want to be when I grow up. Update November 2014: I have been reminded that life is what happens when you are making other plans. On August 2, I was working in my garden. I had just turned on the sprinkler to water the herbs and was running away from the spray, when I stumbled over something, went airborn, and landed on my elbows and knees. I shattered my right kneecap, abraded everything else, and broke my le...Expand for more
ft upper arm in two places. Now, three months later, I have started physical therapy and am on the hard road back to independence. Fortunately I am retired and my husband, an English professor, teaches only two days a week, so we have been able to work PT and grocery shopping into his schedule pretty easily. I probably won't be able to drive until the new year. I am looking forward to our next reunion and to being able to dance a little! Update December 2020: What a year. So far we are all OK, including my 99=year old mother who still lives in our old house. I have been making masks and scrub caps, now numbering in the hundreds, for nurses in a local hospital. My husband just finished his next-to-last semester of teaching at the University of MN. He will retire one year from now. My son Matthew is still at Google, He is able to work at home, as is his wife Cary, a psychotherapist. She helped write and participated in a virtual gala for The Lamplighters, a San Francisco light opera company. So all continues to be well in our little bubble. I look forward to the day when we all can trade stories of this horrible year in person. Up date, September 2022. A year ago we moved my mom, who is now 100 years old, to my brother Ned's house in Baltim9re. I no longer have any connection to Long Island except very happy memories. I am looking forward to our next reunion to renew old friendships and revisit old stomping grounds, especially West Meadow beach. If you read this, please say hi.
