Linda's Story

Wow! Where do I begin. I left Crestwood in 1976 and went to Trent University. My good friend Walter Della Mora introduced me to his cousin Dennis Viscardis, and I knew I would marry him the day we met! I got my B.A. in French and English literature. After graduation in 1979, I got a job at The Quaker Oats Company of Canada - I started out in the mail room, was promoted to the steno pool, was promoted to secretary of the Manager of Distribution and Planning, then was promoted to Warehousing and Inventory Control Co-ordinator. I was responsible for making sure all Quaker product was where it was supposed to be all across Canada, when it was supposed to be there. (If you carry a grudge for not having your oatmeal available from 1979 - 1986, it was my fault!) In 1980, Dennis and I married. In 1984, our daughter Laura was born. In 1987, our son Robert was born. Two amazing children - the millionaire's family! However, Laura was born with multiple disabilities, which put a few wrinkles in our plans. Even now, 26 years later, we have not ironed all those wrinkles out! I left my position at Quaker Oats to focus on helping Laura to learn to talk, walk, etc. It was a lot of work! But very rewarding. Den and I decided Laura would need a sibling, so ... along came Robbie. I became an advocate for our daughter's educational and citizenship rights, which kept me very busy. Then, I became an advocate for our son's educational rights. My work as an advocate caught the eye of organizations across the country. I wrote a lot on the subject of disability, and began doing some adult education on the subject. I was part of a large movement away from institutional thinking about people who live with disabilities. I was responsible for several successful local initiatives, most of which continue today without my involvement. Over the years, when I was not tied so tightly to Laura's needs, I was able to work in various capacities in the community development field. I was Executive Director of a Community Living Association; I was a Team Leader for a community development programme at what is now the Ontario Early Years Centre, and I was a Facilitator for a grassroots group of over 350 families who had a son or daughter living with a disability. Later, I became a journalist, writing for several online news programmes. At the age of 17, our daughter left school to begin her new life. This meant that I was no longer able to work outside the home. So, I began a consulting business - Viscardis & Associates. My focus was, and continues to be, doing all I can to promote a "strong healthy community." Now, I work with an amazing company, as a healthy lifestyle and life transformation coach. I help people who are ready to take full control of their health and their finances to make significant change in their lives. It is truly amazing, and humbling, to see people's lives transform before my eyes! It is so rewarding to see a strong, healthy community growing in front of me!! My Vision: A global community where all people are welcomed and warmly embraced, have reciprocal relationships and participate meaningfully as contributing citizens. When this happens, we will have a strong, healthy community. My Mission: To be a change agent; to encourage and inspire others to discover their God-given potential (physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially), and then to use that potential to inspire others to go out and make change in the world. I am seeking like-minded people who are interested in leaving a positive impact on the world - who would love to leave a legacy of health and wealth to their family, friends and their community. I am looking for people to join me in my mission to change the health and wealth of our "community," one person at a time. I am looking for people with the following characteristics: - faithful - available - teachable - passionate - able to make things happen - a team player - connected - has a heart of service If this sounds like you, and if you are ready to make some changes in your life, I would love to chat with you - to see how we can work together. I hope you all remember me as a person who cared deeply about others, and who did her very best in her studies. Of course, I'm sure people remember me as a very quiet, introverted person who had few good friends and would rather spend time in a good book than at a party. I always wanted to be a secretary when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right - I did become a secretary for a while. I was very good at it! But it didn't really fulfill me. Many years ago, I discovered yoga. This is something I absolutely love, and I practise every day. When I am stressed, you'll find me doing meditative poses. I also spend a great deal of time praying, as I have really focused these last several years on my relationship with God. I have two people who made a huge impact on my life: John McKnight: is a world renowned community developer (out of Washington State) who told me that if I surrounded our...Expand for more
daughter only with people who are paid to be there to support her, she would never live a life of inclusion - she would always be excluded from meaningful things in life, such as true, reciprocal relationships, paid employment, etc. I started the next day to work towards a vision of Laura having unpaid, meaningful, reciprocal relationships in her life. I am happy to say that to a large degree I have been successful. She is currently living away from us, on her own, without a great deal of paid support, in large part because of the friendships she has. Gary Lounsbury: CEO of Five Counties Children's Centre here in Peterborough, told me that I have a lot to say that is worth listening to. I didn't believe him at first, but he kept telling me this message over several years, until finally I did believe him. I've been making my opinions and my passions known ever since! I have always lived here in Peterborough. I have often wondered what it might be like to move to another city and start over. But the relationships our daughter Laura has nurtured could never be replaced, so we continue on here. Our family is here, and we are very happy here. And Den has built a very successful tiling business here. (D & V Tile Ltd.) I have a food obsession. First of all, eating it. Then, finding the most healthy, nutritious, tasty food possible. I have spent years and years trying to find the best nutrition that would help me with my health concerns. Almost four years ago, I became a cancer conqueror. Because of my focus on natural healing and nutrition, I am healthier today than I was when I was in high school. Three different doctors told me recently that I have the health of a 19-yar-old!! I am obviously doing something right! What was my biggest surprise? Beyond finding out that Walter Della Mora had a cousin that I wanted to marry, my biggest surprise was being gifted with a daughter who has multiple disabilities. If I made $100 million, I'd give a large percentage of it to a project I would like to lead: the co-creation of an intentional community where residents (owners and/or renters) live because they are committed to supporting and loving one another reciprocally. I would spend the rest on staying debt free, ensuring our daughter has the appropriate supports firmly in place, and helping people less fortunate than I to eat healthy, nutritious food. To be truly happy, I would not have to be managing our daughter's life on a day-to-day basis. My current age (in 2010) is 53. When I was 12, my oldest brother turned 16. I thought that he was OLD!! I thought that I never wanted to get THAT old. People who were 53 were absolutely ancient. I never thought that 53 could be the best year of my life, and that 54 will be even better! I am a professional network marketer. I help people to change their health, and if they want to, change their wealth. I am proud to be part of a company with such integrity. The management team, the vision of the company, the company's products, the ability to absolutely transform people's lives - all of this fits with my vision and mission. I am well on my way to becoming a six-figure income earner with this company. I recently expanded my business into Mexico and look forward to tremendous changes in the health and wealth of the people in that country. I am currently seeking people a little closer to home who are interested in transforming their own and others' lives. My best friend would tell you I'm a visionary, who sees the potential in each and every person I meet, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet and inward focused. I think the inward focus comes from my constant focus on listening to the "little voice" inside of me. My husband Dennis and I live in a large home, 2,600 square feet, with our dog and canary. Our daughter Laura lives downtown, as does our son Robbie. I never really had the empty nest syndrome - I was thrilled to have our kids gone! My biggest victory, I guess, since I've never been a trophy winner, was being recipient of The Commemorative Medal (for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation) of Canada in recognition of “significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada.” In 10 years, I hope to be one of the highest income earners in my company. I'm going to get there by helping each and every person on my team, who matches energy with me, also become one of the highest income earners in the company. My "oldest" friend is Betty Watts Vogelsang, whom I met at Crestwood. I think that the thing that originally drew us together was our mutual love of poetry. I fell in love with her spirit, her non-judgmental manner, and, of course, her wacky sense of humour. I love her more today. And I'm happy to say that we still connect regularly. I don't have a lot of secrets, but I think it would surprise others at a reunion that I married Walter's cousin, that I was once double the size that I am now, that I am a cancer survivor, and that we have a daughter who lives with the effects of autism.
