Linda's Story
If you remember me you were probably in Music or Drama. That's where most of the people I knew best were.
Some of the teachers I really liked at Glendale High were Mr Amaya (Geography), Mr Maves ( Music/Drama)..
handsome young Mr Peterson (Sophmore English) and Mr Richardson (History).
I was in Keith Maves Choir and Madrigals classes and I was also an accompianist for both of them. I was honored to be selected for All State Choir in my Jr. year along with Linda Herre, Diana Oparnice and Jim that is something I will always remember! I was also in Mr. Maves drama class and was in...Lil Abner...Wish You Were Here...Rebel Without a Cause and Web of Murder. Good memories!!
I remember the day JFK was assassinated. I was in 10th grade. It was during a class change and I was almost to my choir class when the prinipal announced it over the loud speaker. Everyone stopped dead still and it was real quiet for a few seconds and then you could hear people exclaiming and crying. It was so sad and we were worried about what would happen next. Would the communists take advantage of the situation and come and get us? I also remember the Cuban Missle Crisis and the Cold War with Russia and of course Viet Nam. Those were sad and scarey times!
On the fun side, I remember the boys singing "Chug a Lug, Chug a Lug" with the music in the cafeteria during lunch. It was great !! And, I remember having to sing "Row Row Row Your Boat" while scooting across the gym floor on my fanny during PE. How worried I was about having wet ugly hair for the rest of the day when my PE class took swimming during 1st period. I also remember failing the electric type writer because I had a heavy touchhhhhhhhhhhh!. Lots of memories!
I hated having to sit through sports assemblies. So for awhile, when one came up, I hid out, with a few other kids, in the auditorium basement, under the stage where the dressing rooms were. One time a teacher almost caught us but we heard him coming and we hid in the costume closet behind a bunch of dresses. The teacher came in and looked around but didn't find us. (Whew!) I never did THAT again!!
One of the wildest things I did as a teenager was one night sneaking onto the Biltmore Estates where Wrigley Mansion was to see the "Pink Sidewalks". A friend of mine took me there to prove that there really WAS such a thing. At that time it was still desert out there). We parked his car down the road around a curve from the place, then cut back through the brush to where we could cross the road and get onto property. Once on the sidewalk, we didn't dare use a flashlight for fear we'd be seen so we walked on it in the dark. It didn't take long before I started worrying about guard dogs and bobcats and rattle snakes and skunks and stuff! I could hear things moving in the bushes so when I was too sared to go on, we turned around and headed back down the sidewalk to the road. It was really, REALLY dark out there, so we decid...Expand for more
ed it would be easier to see if we walked back to the car on the road. We hadn't gone far when we heard a siren and looked back to see a police car speeding down the highway towards us with it's lights flashing!!. We thought for sure we'd been seen and the police had been called so we ran off the road into the brush the way we came. UNFORTUNATELY, we forgot that we had had to climb through a barbed wire fence on our way! So, since I was in the lead, I ran right into it and litterally bounced off (BOING!!) and landed in the dirt. It took a minute to figure out what had happened and by then the police had sped right on past us and kept going. They weren't even after us! (But I imagine, if they HAD seen us, out there walking down the highway in the middle of the night, they might have stopped to ask why.) I ended up wounded and bleeding but we didn't get caught! We found the car and got home ok but it was kind of hard to explain how I got my wounds!!
I got married in 1965 when I was a Junior and we are still together. I married a guy from Luke and we ended up traveling all over for 20 years, moving about every 2 years. The 2 most interesting places we were stationed were Fairbanks, Alaska and Keflavik, Iceland. We've also lived in.. Goldsboro,NC..Las Vegas, NV..Denver,CO (twice).., Albuquerque, NM and Beale AFB in Northern CA . When my husband retired from the AF he was promised a job here in Utah at Hill ABF, so we moved here. We've lived here in East Layton, UT, up close to the Wasatch Mts, for 30 years now and we'll probably stay.
We moved to Fairbanks in 1974 during the constuction of the Alaskan Pipeline. Housing was scarce there at the time so the kids and I had to stay behind until Burt could get us onto base housing. Before he left he moved us to Show Low, AZ where my parents were. We bought a llttle place across the street from them and we lived there and then rented it out when we left. It was a few miles out of town, in the forest, right by Fools Hollow Lake and we loved it!! We finally sold it in 1990 and I'm still sad about it!.
We have 7 kids, 4 boys and 3 girls. All but 2 of them were born in a different state. We also have 23 grandkids... so far...ages from 23 to 1. Three of them are married, but none have any children so I'm not a great grandma ..yet.
I was a stay at home mom until my youngest went to school. Then, after a couple of small jobs I ended up working for CITI CARDS here in Layton as a Credit Analyst. I stayed with them for 19 years but retired in 2009 when my husband retired from his job at Hill AFB.
I have stayed involved with music and drama and the kids and I have been in a few plays and musicals over the years. I also like to read and sew and I'm really interested in Mormon pioneers and family history. I enjoy going on vacations and seeing the country but don't get to go enough to suit me.
I would like to reconnect to friends I made in school. If you knew me please feel free to write!
