Linda's Story
As a child growing up, I lived on Boicewood between Tidwell Rd. and Laura Koppe. I have wonderful memories of my friends and going to Dodson Lake Park and the Granada Theater. And who could forget the Timberland Roller Rink and Rainbow Roller Rink.
I married exactly one year from the day I graduated from Smiley. He was a '64 Smiley graduate. Ten years of marriage was tough but the rewards were two great kids, a son and a daughter. I remarried in '83 to a wonderful guy. We will celebrate 29 years of marriage in July, yea! My husband and I were both born in Houston and have lived here all our lives. We enjoy spending time with our 13 year old grandson and 20 month old granddaughter who keep us young at heart.
At Shadydale Elementary my favorite teacher was Mr. Louis Brown. He is in his 80's now and still lives in Texas. I enjoy staying in touch with him, and his memories of the past are awesome.
At Northwood Jr. High my favorite teacher was Mr. Goodall who taught English grammar. Loved Mr. Goodall's crew cut.
In high school I worked for W.T. Grant in charge of the candy and floral departments. I still remember the smell of that popcorn popping and if there was any left at night (of course there was) I would ta...Expand for more
ke it to school the next day and share the popcorn with my typing teacher, Judith Gutel, remember? I think she became Judith Becker. Would love to know what happened to her. Would love to know what happened to Terri Fruitt who also worked at W. T. Grant. I remember fun times in my high school gym class with "our gang".
I retired in '86 and happy to do so. My husband is also retired and we enjoy the freedom to do whatever now. Besides having fun with the grandkids, I like to lunch with my gal pals, sing to my favorite music and write poetry. I also love to decorate. Having taken journalism in high school now comes in handy being the editor of our community newsletter.
I try not to take life too seriously and find humor in most everything. I hope my friends remember me as making them laugh and never without a song to sing. Our generation was really cool. We had Elvis, fine cars and rock and roll and it doesn't get any better than that. To all my friends out there, although our paths don't meet as often as they used to, I cherish the times we had from elementary through high school and I hope life has been good to you.
If we could survive 12 years of school without air conditioning, we can survive anything.
