Linda's Story

Hey! Really hard to believe its been 45 years since I was at Mohonasen. Time sure does fly, especially when looking back. Well I squeeked by Social Studies in my senior year and was on the list to graduate! Was glad I had made it. Didn't get my regents, but made graduation. The following year I went to Spencer Business School and came out with an Executive Secretarial Diploma. Entered State Employment in 1970 with the Department of Tax and Finance. Got married, had a daughter and got divorced in the course of about three years. Stayed a single parent for another three years staying in Schenectady. Started dating a close friend from high school days at the Rollerama. John (from Schalmont) and I eloped in May 1977 while camping at an Ausable Chasms Campground. The following fall I resigned from State Service to be a stay at home Mom and Wife. We had our son the following year. Returned to state service with Higher Education Services Corporation in 1994. Took a promotion and went to the Workers Compensation Board in 2000. Retired from State Service in September 2011 with just over 24 years of service, having had a 17 year break in service along the way. I love being re...Expand for more
tired. I am a widow. John had more than his share of health problems along the way. Terminally I'll with kidney failure, went through Dialysis for over three years, received a cadaver transplant and was doing very well. Through the years he had spinal stenosis causing a great deal of pain, but didn't slow him down much. In January of 2009 he was diagnosed with a terminal Brain Tumor. He stayed very optimistic, thinking he could beat the odds. He was given 18 months but made it through 23 months. In December 2010 John passed away. It was a real tough couple of years, but we had 33 great years together. My retirement is not one shared with John as planned but I have been making the most of it. I love being home. I've been traveling a little, camping and visiting family and friends somewhat. Currently recuperating from double stress fractures to both femurs, where I had rods placed to make my legs weight bearing while fractures heal. Hoping to be back in my kayak by May of this year. To sum it all up, life is good, life goes on. I love my independence, my family of two kids and four grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews and my family of friends. Hope all are enjoying life!
