Linda's Story

Life On this sunny southern California October day, I probably should be working and not engaging in this self-indulgence, but the work is always there and I might not be in the mood to self-indulge again any time soon, so here I go. Since graduation in 1969, I went to college and graduated from CSUN in 1975. I took a semester off to backpack through Europe and a year to work at Capitol Records, before deciding to finish college and enter law school. In 1976, during my second year of law school at Loyola in Los Angeles, I married my husband Kurt Rice. Our first child was born before we'd planned, during my third year of law school. Catlin will be 32 in February. She and her husband, Darian, were wed in our backyard in August 2004. They presented us with a beautiful granddaughter in March 2007 and a grandson in January 2009. Our younger daughter, Erin, is 27 years old, single and working for Spike TV. I've had two jobs I've loved. I worked as a waitress at the Sagebrush Cantina from 1974 to 1979 and have been practicing law since 1979. For the past five or six years, I've been a principal of Rice & Bloomfield here in Woodland Hills. I am a trial lawyer - yes, the scourge of the earth, if most of the media is to be believed. I like it, though. I'm able to help people and that gives me a great deal of satisifaction. I handle personal injury, employment law, insurance bad faith and medical negligence cases, primarily. My partner does a fair amount of business litigation and administrative work, in addition to handling personal injury cases. My husband, Kurt, has worked as a chiro...Expand for more
practor for 25 years and is starting to think about winding down his practice. I have no plans to retire, although we are starting to consider re-locating to Sonoma County -something we've talked about for 20 years. The draw now is that is where our daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, Cheyenne, reside - in Santa Rosa. I am active in the Kiwanis Club of Warner Center, a community service organization which just hosted its 14th annual Special Olympics Equestrian Event on September 29th. To have the chance to speak with the athletes and the families there to cheer them on makes all the work involved worthwhile. Everyone should have some involvement in community service - it's among the most rewarding way I spend some of my free time. In addition to Special Olympics, we've rehabbed classrooms for handicapped kids, built gardens at LAUSD schools, regularly cook Sunday dinner at Ronald McDonald House and provide after-school programs at a local elementary school. I am also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and a Board member of Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles, where I have been quite active - interviewing and meeting with legislators on issues of concern to me and my clients. In my spare time, I like to cook and read and write. I enjoy working in the garden during most of the year and take a lot of pride in the half-acre we own in the "Walnut Acres" area of Woodland Hills. I'm looking forward to a major remodel we have planned to do next year. I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help jog my high school memories, most of which have faded with time.
