Linda's Story

19 September 2015 Dear Friends: I have just a replaced my computer, after an11 month battle. I won the war; but it was not worth the energy and time spent. If anyone wrote me; your message is in cyberspace, or 'The Twilight Zone.' I truly dislike machines! I use social media, now. I prefer to use my email address. Could it be possible that 63 years passed since we started elementary school? Despite being 67.6 years old, I do not feel those years. Do you? I have learned that life continually changes. Alan Weintraub, from SSHH June 1965 and I have been married for 45 years; and together for 50 years. He is a wonderful, brilliant, compassionate, empathetic man. His wild days, as Hondo, from SSHS are gone. Honestly! Alan is a psychologist and maintains a full time private practice, and works full time as a Clinical Director and therapist for a large methadone clinic He never denies help to one unable to pay for services. He graciously accepts homemade dog cookies; to the delight of our three dogs! He also is President of A Night Out. This is a 501c charity for abused women. He and his dear friend Marla began this 4 years ago. It flourished while Marla was president; and he was her vice president. Now it continues; the two continue to work together on this very worthwhile endeavor. I contribute by volunteering as a staff member. A Night Out takes ladies who have been severely abused, out for a night: to theaters, to dinners, to movies, for makeovers, for new clothes, for manis / pedis. It runs the gamut. Volunteers and staff take care of the ladies' children, and accompany the staff and ladies to the venues. We have 2 sons, Adam, 40, a social worker, is employed by the Government. He supervises a special task safety force. Confidentiality prevents his sharing what he does. He's been a Kenpo Martial Artist, for 34 years; having earned his second degree black belt. Master Sensei, has taught him the entire time! He is adept in numerous karate styles. Adam is also skilled at American Sign Language, and lip reading. Adam is married to a loving 'daughter' from Bulgaria who graduated with high honors in 'Dental Hygiene (Magda Cum Laud). She has a MA in mathematics, also with the title of Magda Cum Laud. We adore her! She is filled with love, generosity, gentleness, and a positive sense of self. They have a daughter, Simona, who will be a year old in October 2015. Jonathan (33), has a 'MA in Educational Administration.' He is a gifted educator. He just left a position at a north suburban as Dean of Students. Now he is Director of Student Interventions at a superior west suburban high school. This is an amazing accomplishment for an educator as young as he. He is beginning his doctorate. Jonathan plays Rugby for an adult semi-pro team in the Chicago area. Rugby is the roughest game ever seen! He continues playing after 3 arthroscopic repairs to his knees. He won the 'Coach of the Year' award 4 years ago. He was chosen to play Rugby at the 'Maccabees Games in Argentina,' in July 2008. Since that was the mo...Expand for more
nth he was getting married, he made a very wise choice! On 5 July 2008 Jonathan and Marcy married. This was a fantastic day for all families and friends! Everything was perfect. Her parents' friends handmade made the Chuppah, and friends of her mom potted flowers for the poles in which to place the Chuppah. The interfaith service was extraordinary. It was written about the love and commitment that Jonathan and Marcy share. Both the the pastor and rabbi knew Marcy and Jonathan, so the ceremony was warmly written. The bride and groom stated personal vows; need I say all guests were moved and teary eyed? It is wonderful to have a terrific daughter-in-law. Our Marcy is a pediatric nurse. She is the Director of Out Patient Children Services at a north suburban enormous hospital . Marcy is a delight: intelligent, witty, and fun to be a part of our family. She loves sports (yuck); Alan and she have a great time watching them together. The best thing is that she can cook...and she is a superb Jewish cook! She and Jonathan made us grandparents! Owen joined our family on May 27, 2009! Love does happen at first sight. Eloise was born 19 October 2012. Having three grandchildren is the best part of being senior citizens! In 1999, we moved to a multicultural - multi-ethnic community northern suburb near the lake, after leaving in a western suburb. This is where we belong. Sadly, a car accident left me disabled; but alive. Each day I celebrate the joys of life. I have also fought many battles with cancer. However, I am a SURVIVOR! Yes, I continues to educate. I have earned 3 masters degrees: Educational Therapy, Administration of Special Education Programs, and Counseling. Despite having disabilities, I am very active. I advocate for disabled adolescents whose parents experience difficulties with the local school systems. The laws, designed to help, in reality, do not! So, the 'Don Quixote' within, continues to chase windmills; sometimes with success. Did you know that Illinois is fourth from the bottom in servicing disabled students? My specialty is working with adolescent who have experienced psychiatric disorders, combined with severe behavioral issues, co-morbid, with learning problems! I love working with these teens. However, they take one step forward, then two steps backward. I am an avid dog rescuer of Golden Retrievers. We are a 4ever home for our adoptees! We currently have been adopted by Winnie the Pooh, a 12 year old Golden Retriever, and 4 year old, 85 pound Bailey. He thinks he is a 5 pound lap puppy. I hope that anyone who reads this tome has found contentment in life. It's been fun reconnecting with my grammar school buddies, high school friends, college, graduate school, and former colleagues. The e-mails I received are amazing! I never realized the positive things I have done to help and encourage former students, student teachers, and career special educators whom I mentored and supervised, during my years as an educator & administrator. Celebrate life; it is wonderful! Fondly, Lindy
