Linda's Story
Life
I married Shane (Buie) in 1991 & we have 3 boys! We live just outside of Gainesville where I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist.
Shane has his own business - Buie Enterprises. He is a licensed aircraft mechanic. He also builds & repairs airboats.
Would love to hear from fellow classmates - vsbldh at yaho dot com or linthelmft at yaho dot com ;) or you could join face book or my space/ lindadbuie and look me up!
College
I attended DBCC, FSU, & VSU (Valdosta State). I graduated from DBCC in the Spring of 1991 with an AA in Psychology, from FSU in the Fall of 1992 with BS in Psychology (minor in Law), & from VSU in the Summer of 1994 with a MS in Family Sociology. I also completed a Post Masters Certification in Marriage & Family Therapy from VSU in July of 1997 (my residency & supervision.)
I still love Florida State Football & Bobby Bowden. Go Noles!!!!
Workplace
I did have my fair share of odd part time jobs working through college. I was a tutor/proctor for the DBCC Math Dept, a consultant for a baby welcome service, the "Attention, K-mart Shoppers" announcer, work-study for FSU Office of Admission & Psych Dept, housekeeper, leasing consultant, file clerk, research assistant for Dr. Mark Berkley at FSU, ward clerk, mental health assistant, crisis unit/detox intake assessor, & discharge cooridinator. I was offered but declined a lab tech position with FSU's Psych Research Dept on Female Pain Studies - it was to administer pap smears to the female lab rats! At that point, I decided it was time for graduate school.
Contrary to popular belief, I did not become a professional student. In 1995, I left the comforts of graduate school & took a counseling position working with a Juvenile Justice grant to provide family therapy to teenagers on community control (probation) or on aftercare (returning to the community after completing a commitment program) & their families. I was more like a big sister or a coach to my clients. I loved my job & I looked forward to going to work everyday. Then in 1997, I became a "MOMMY" & the clients noticed. I went from being ...Expand for more
their big sister to their worst nightmare - a surrogate mom! I was promoted to Program Manager/Supervisor in 1998 & that is where I stayed until the grant wrapped up in 2000.
Once the grant ended in 2000, I was already pregnant with our second child & I was able to step into a position with DCF/ADM/TANF (state funded contract programs.) But I still was able to provide Family Therapy as well as Marital Therapy. The downside was having to make numerous trips to the county jail to provide emergency assessments & consultations per these contracts. This is where I learned that one should never put a delusional psychotic client in a room with 11 uniformed deputies & pregnant lady dressed in bright pink & expect that client to honestly answer any question the lady in pink asks or even maintain eye contact with her. He already knows he has issues because he is in custody but acknowledging the pregnant lady in bright pink swimming in a sea of uniformed LEO would just be utterly crazy!!!
As I got closer to my due date, I was asked to assist in writing a contract proposal for a state funded substance abuse prevention program for children. Once I returned from maternity leave, I was offered a position with Children's Home Society as the clinical supervisor. So in May 2001, I left the agency (PBH) that I worked with for 6 years & joined CHS where I remained for 2 years (during the shift from DCF to PFSF). I had baby #3 in 2002. In 2003, I went back to PBH & I continued juggling being "Mommy" to 3 little boys under the age of 5 with a high stress career.
In 2004, I lost my oldest brother (David) in a car accident. This changed my perspective on everything. I had worked so hard to have it all (family & career) but compassion fatique set in & I was "extra crispy" deep fried, which on a burnout scale of 1-10 is about a 13. In January 2005, I finally became an honest to goodness "stay-at-home" mommy (which was my favorite "job" to date.)
Now that all of our boys are in school, I am currently working for UF's OBGYN Dept as a Family Therapist. I know, I know but they cannot make me wear blue & orange!
