Linda's Story

Note: Most of my junior and senior high school years were in Van Nuys Jr & Sr High Schools. When my uncle was transferred with Lockheed from Burbank to Vandenburg AFB, my aunt, uncle, grandma and I lived in Solvang and I attended Santa Ynez High. During the last semester of my senior year, my uncle transferred back to southern California and we lived in Granada Hills High, so that's the school I graduated from in 1966. Fast forward 10 yrs later to my life in Nebraska- I moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1976, and am still enjoying "the good life". Single again since 1984, I have found my calling in the education/animal care field. During the week I'm the Education Assistant at Fontenelle Forest, scheduling school field trips (and sometimes teaching in the programs &/or leading hikes). I also register campers from Toddlers-6th grade for our summer day camps. Working with the Fontenelle Forest & Neale Woods raptors since 1995, I've trained volunteers and staff (also on the federal and state permits) since 1997. I've had, and still have, wonderful friends, including an invaluable Master Falconer, as mentors. On weekends, I take care of visitors and resident education animals at Neale Woods Nature Center (including a Rough-legged Hawk I "manned" in 1996 or, I should say, she trained me....and still keeps me on my toes!). I was a licensed rehabber for raptors from '93-'99, then did education programs and housed a female American Kestrel (small falcon) for The Omaha Raptor Team Inc from 1999-2006 when we disbanded, and am still privileged to house a male American Kestrel for use in education/conservation programs. very weekend at Neale Woods and we demonstrate how well falconry techniques work with a bird who cannot fly well enough to be released, but can fly to the glove for as far as he is capable (6 ft maximum), in order to help maintain what muscle strength he has. I'm fascinated by falconry, and will be attending the NAFA (North America Falconers Association) falconry meet in Kearney NE later this year. When it works with my schedule, I still facilitate "Team Challenge" a team building program (sanctioned by Noel International) and "Animals On The Go" program for Gifford Farm Education Center (a dept of ESU#3, State of Ne). . The Lord has blessed me with a fantastic life, and I am thankful. Please E-mail me. - Linda 2016 update - The Neale Woods Nature Center building closed a few years ago; however, I'm still working as an Education Assistant at Fontenelle Forest during the week. I also teach raptor education/conservation programs, usually on the weekends at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center. The 2012 NAFA/IAF (International Association of Falconers) meet in Kearney, NE was exciting and one of the best vacations ever. Helen, a wonderful falconer friend, and I attended, with 2 Kestrels, a Cooper's Hawk, and her (large) dog. The programs and hunting were fantastic, and even the vendor room was fascinating with all the equipment, books, and people and birds checking out merchandise. I'll probably remain a member of NAFA for the rest of my life! Has it really been 50 years since I graduated from high school? Amazing how fast the years go by ... my grandmother always said "the older we get, the faster time goes by". She was right.
