Linda Jean May; Lin May; Lin Doherty; now SHINAN N. BARCLAY
Tile Maker, Ceramic Artist & Author
Linda May, now Shinan Barclay shaped her first clay pot at nine, while working on the "Dabbler" badge in Girl Scouts. Born with art in her veins, Shinan's parents met at the Chicago Art Institute. Her father became art director of Holiday Magazine. While her paternal uncle, Rollo May was a world renowned psychologist and author of Love and Will, The Courage to Create, and My Quest for Beauty.
At nineteen, Shinan became a missionary teacher in an Arctic Inuit village. Shinan says, "People say I have a gift for ceramics. Recognizing the spirit in clay is a gift that the Inuits gave me. I listen to the clay. Sometimes I shape the clay, mostly, the clay shapes me."
For nine years Shinan lived in San Diego, wrote reviews for the Museum of Modern Art and completed her Masters degree. Then she moved to Sedona, founded the Storytellers guild and wrote ar...Expand for more
tist interviews and gallery reviews.
Shinan's writing has been translated into Japanese and Portuguese and appears in the anthologies: Heavenly Helpings, Scent of Cedars, Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul II Open My Eyes; Open My Soul, and Sacred Texts of the WorldÂs Great Religions. She is the co author of two books: Flowering Woman, Moontime for Kory, the story of a girl's rite of passage into womanhood and The Sedona Vortex Experience, a guidebook to power places. Burnt out on writing, Shinan moved to Oregon and enrolled in a summer class in ceramics at Southwestern Oregon Community College. Under the enthusiastic instruction of Sue Scott, MFA, Shinan's love for clay was rekindled. "I love shaping forms that are both beautiful and useful." Her unique art pieces are in collections world wide. She was selected as Artist of the Month and her tiles were featured on KCBY TV.
Shinan lives in Coos Bay, gardens, swims, rides a motorcycle and jitterbugs.
