Linda's Story
Life
Thanksgiving Weekend 1998, I woke up blind in my right eye with a terrible headache at the base of my skull and around my eye socket. It was diagnosed as optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve). With no other symptoms and a good MRI scan, I waited out the 8 weeks until my sight returned. The doctor wished me the best of luck and life went on.
Fast forward to Spring 2002. I began to feel increased fatigue and occasional balance problems into the summer. Around September/October I began having problems with my left eye. This was diagnosed as recurrent subclinical optic neuritis.
Both incidents combined now sent me to a Neurologist for evaluation. After a barrage of testing - MRI with and without contrast, VEP, BER, 20 vials of blood, spinal tap (4 half filled vials vs. a typical couple of drops for testing menegitis), and 6 more vials of blood - my diagnosis was confirmed in April 2003.
I have Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis.
All things considered, I'm lucky and have been doing pretty well. I've been taking Avonex (disease modifiying drug) since May 2003. Since diagnosis I have had two big attacks and a flare up. But all in all, doing my best.
I have an team called "Sleepy's Crew" that has raised over $ 10,000 in the annual Long Island Chapter of the National MS Societies Walk for the cure. We will keep going until a cure is found!
Until then, I keep on doing what I do....work, play, travel, line dance at least three times a week, and enjoy each day!
Have fun....smile and laugh as hard and as often as you can. You only go around once and this is a one way trip.
Enjoy yourself!! I do!
School
As far as High School is concerned, I'm probably the classmate that is not remembered. My name might ring a bell, maybe my face too but that's about it. I was really quite and probably best described as part of the background.
The only clubs I participated in were Leo Club and, for a little while, I was in the...Expand for more
Drama Club. (Had a couple of combined small parts in "The Mouse That Roared".
College
After High School, I went to Nassau Community College. First as an Accounting major but when that wasn't working out I switched to Business Administration. I graduation Nassau in June 1989 with an Associates Degree.
In the Fall of '89, I went to Dowling College where I majored in Finance. I graduated in Spring 1991 with my BBA in Finance.
Four year degree in four years. Not bad, eh? Truth is I didn't have the cash to have it take any longer than that. Not to mention that when I graduated, a real job was hard to come by. Thankfully, I was waitressing before graduation and it helped pay the bills until I did get that first "real" job.
Workplace
After I graduated with my Bachelors degree in Finance, a "real" job was almost impossible to find. Especially since I was not interested in working for commission only as stock broker. I was a waitress for about a year until I found my first real job. I was a clerical assistant at a direct mail marketing company in Melville.
After about two years, I happen to have a chance meeting with an HR manager at Olympus America who liked me and asked me to apply. Olympus picked me up in one of their customer service departments. Within a couple of years I was made Supervisor. I was with Olympus for a total of 11 1/2 years. Olympus relocated to PA, a move I was not wanting to make. So, I worked through the transition of my department and was laid off in October 2005.
After some hit and misses, I am now working in Melville for a temporary/permanent placement company at their North American corporate headquarters.
Finally out of customer service and making use of my Finance/Accounting background, I help reconcile a large customers records. Playing with spread sheets all day while listing to my XM online or CD's; this is my idea of the perfect job! For the first time in a long time, I really love what I do now.
