Linda's Story

I'd love to hear from any EHS alum, particularly Austinites. I'd really love to hear from Lisa Stell, Lupe Garcia, Laura and Chris Bain, Becky Alvarado, Mike Mullins, and Mark Fraga. I'd also love to hear from Eastwood Knolls alums Donna Kelly, Teresa Boyce, and Tricia Hunt. After high school graduation, I remained in El Paso for years. For almost 10 years, I worked at El Paso Community College where I also went to school, completing two Associate degrees. I almost married a couple of times, but didn't actually tie the knot until 1986. That marriage took me to Austin, TX. Although the marriage ended in 1991, I still live in Austin. I'm happily married to my second husband, Scott, an electrical engineer. We have no children, but enjoy spending time with our extended family that includes both adult and young nieces and nephews. We live just west of Austin in the town of Lakeway. Soon after relocating to Austin, I began working in the high-tech industry, which is how I met Scott. The high-tech arena opened up my career opportunities. After working as a contracts and intellectual property manager, web designer, operations director, and project officer and turning down a promotion that would have required me to relocate to NYC, I eventually settled into steady work as a technical communicator, trainer, and manager. I now manage our own professional services business (Pixels & Verbs, LLC), providing the "verbs" part of the business. This includes technical communications (traditional documentation and online help development, writing, editing, illustration, planning, management, and design), template design, desktop publishing, training and curriculum development, business analysis, and organizational effectiveness consulting). While Scott fills the "pixels" side of the business (digital photography) in his free time, I also do a bit of photography, but I'm not nearly as good at it as Scott, for whom photography has been a hobby most of his life. Both Scott and I enjoy working with computers, photography, cooking, reading, travel, and spending time with our extended family in the US, Canada, and Scotland. In 2008, Scott began mentoring a high school robotics team. He has expertise with both the hardware and software sides of things. I was somewhat involved that first year, but only in the background. In January of 2009, I became the team's lead non-engineering mentor. The 'varsity' team we work with competes in FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition). All I can say is "Wow!" If you have children who are at all interested in technology or business, look for a FIRST Robotics for them. There are competition levels for grades K-12; see firstinspires.org for details. You can also get involved, even if you're not an engineer or don't ...Expand for more
have a technical background. (BTW, these are not like battlebots, nor or they kit robots.) Not only do I mentor, but I often serve as a judge, head judge, or judge advisor at various competitions (of course, avoiding situations where I judge my own team or teams). Teams not only build and program robots, they create videos, do marketing, build displays, do educational presentations, write handbooks and manuals, and more. Students describe it as the "Hardest. Fun, Ever." Adult volunteers work hard, too, but we all eagerly come back for more every year. It really is great fun and its fun and rewarding to see the kids learn and grow so much. This is my 10th year mentoring and volunteering for FIRST and I'm looking forward to many more years. The robotics teams we work with are based in a small school district (Eanes ISD) in Austin, TX. The school district can't provide enough funds to support the needs of competition teams. So, in September of 2010, I filed the necessary paperwork (forms, bylaws, etc.) that formed a Texas nonprofit corporation that could help: Westlake & Eanes Science & Technology Association (WESTA). Now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, WESTA manages funds for all competition robotics teams based at the 9 schools in the Eanes ISD, including its sole high school. Since WESTA's formation, I've been an active member of its Board of Directors, on which I currently serve as both the Board secretary, operations officer, and the varsity team's non-engineering representative. This, along with the hours I spend with students after school, fill most of my free time. It helps that my husband and I are both passionate and active in both mentoring and WESTA. In mid-2016, I was diagnosed with Stage II, triple negative, breast cancer. Consequently, I decided to take a year off from work, although I've maintained my robotics mentorship and nonprofit volunteer activities at close to normal levels. Happily, my battle with cancer has been relatively easy for me. Chemotherapy made me bald and tired, but I didn't experience any of the really bad side effects I've seen others endure. Surgery is also behind me now and wasn't too radical, requiring a lumpectomy and removal of some lymph glands. I have radiation therapy ahead of me, but I should be done with cancer by the summer of 2017. I post periodic updates on my Facebook profile; friends often bug me if I don't do this regularly…it's nice to know they care. My care team is fabulous, but what's made this road even easier for me is my husband, Scott, who is an absolute rock without whom I would be incomplete, and the love and support of many friends. I treasure each and every one of you and thank you for your continued prayers, healing thoughts, and caring messages. You are the BEST!!!!
