Linda's Story

Life Following graduation from Sam Houston State University in 1969, I went to work at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston as a writer and photographer in the Public Information Office. It was there I met William K. (Bill) Macdonald, originally of Bellaire, Texas. Bill is a graduate of the University of Houston where he majored in television/radio. We were married 7/11/70 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Galveston. Bill and I have two wonderful children: Keitha, an attorney in Washington D.C., and Kenny, who after serving 5 years as an officer in the Navy is now balancing graduate school and working in Public Affairs for the Port of Portland. They both attended Ball High School where Keitha was valedictorian of her class and Kenny was an honor graduate. Both are married and thanks to Keitha and her husband, we have two grandchildren, Hannah Irene and Miriam Dora, who are absolutely the most precious, wonderful, happy young ladies. Bill and I have been happily married for almost 40 years and are planning a special anniversary celebration this summer. I haven't shot a rifle in years, like I did in high school and college, but Bill does carry a pistol as he is a CSI investigator for the Sheriff's Department. Thanks to TV shows, I don't have to explain what CSI is anymore. We continue to live in Galveston, although I work in Houston for an international corporation as Director of Communications. I have also had the privilege of relating the stories that my grandfather told me about his experiences in Galveston during the 1900 Storm. I have appeared on all the major national news network programs as well as the History Channel, Weather Channel, PBS and the Discovery Channel. I have been very blessed. College Following graduation from Ball High School in 1965, I attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. This school had an excellent journalism department offering a wealth of opportuntities for hands-on writing experiences. I had a number of roles on the school newspaper, including News and Society Editor. One of the best parts was interviewing celebrities performing on campus, such as Peter, Paul and Mary, Al Hurt, and Marty Robins. SHSU formed a Women's Rifle Team when they learned that 6 of us who were on rifle teams at Ball High and Houston schools were coming to that university. I was invited to join and did for two years. I earned two letters and was captain both years. It was great keeping up friendships with those I had competed against in high school, plus the out of town trips (to San Antonio for Fiesta and to New Orleans) were a lot more fun than the ones in high school! While at SHSU, I also earned my teaching certificate and did my s...Expand for more
tudent teaching at Huntsville High School. I completed the requirements for my BA in just over three years and received my degree during the graduation ceremony in May of 1969. Workplace After graduating from Sam Houston State University with a degree in journalism, I began my 20 year career with The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. I started as a writer/photographer in the small Public Information office and continued to advance as our office grew. Eventually I became Director of Instutional Services with a staff of 33, and then Director of Communications within a new Office of Public Affairs. The Communications staff produced regional and national award winning publications and public relations campaigns. During that time I began serving on many boards including the Junior League, Galveston Historical Foundation, United Way, Salvation Army and other. Then St. Mary's Hospital in Galveston offered me a position on its leadership team as Director of Hospital Affairs. I was born at St. Mary's, as were my children, so I already had a deep respect for the work done by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word who founded and operated the hospital. After about 6 years at St. Mary's, I was promoted to the corporate office in Houston as Corporate Communications Executive for the 15-hospital Sisters of Charity Health Care System (SCH). My husband and I decided to continue to live in Galveston and I commuted each day to the north side of Houston. When SCH consolidated with another Catholic health care system to form CHRISTUS Health, I was offered my same job with the new system, but I was going to have to move to San Antonio. At this stage in my life, I decided not to accept the offer but to begin to look locally. The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, an international and multicultural congregation of women religious, at whose hospital and health care system I had worked, offered me a newly created job as their Director of Communications. I have been employed there for more than 10 years. I still make the drive into Houston to the Motherhouse, Villa de Matel, and some days I can telecommute. The Sisters are a very active congregation with ministries in five countries: El Salvador, Guatemala, Ireland, Kenya and the USA. They are co-sponsors of CHRISTUS Health and Catholic Healthcare West, two of the largest Catholic health care systems in the nation, and also have ministries in education, social justice, advocacy, literacy and other contemporary initiatives. I have always loved working in communications (publications, media relations, special events, websites, etc.), but working for the Sisters adds a special and meaningful touch to what I do.
