Linda's Story

I'm mom of a large multi-cultural pile of 14 kids, Eleven of the 14 were lovingly gathered from all over the world - several with special needs and two medically fragile. I have two quadriplegics in my sweet pile, another with a rare chromosomal anomaly and the youngest has Down Syndrome. Three of my girlies are "lifers" - meaning I get to keep them for the rest of my life. Three bio are sprinkled amongst my pile of 14 and yes, they are all mine. Really! I turned recently to one and questioned, "I can't remember how long I was in labor with you, do you remember me telling you?" She giggled, "Mom! I'm one of the adopted ones!" Then one day I was thinking how proud I am of one and suddenly wondered, "Where did he come from again?" I laughed to myself - I had birthed him! They really are all mine and I can't remember how they came home.. I still have the bottom 8 kids at home. I also have 19 grands - six of whom are adopted (some with special needs) which means that our kids have lovingly embraced the joys of adoption and special needs and that makes this mama so very tickled! I spend my days homeschooling and caring for my treasures while advocating on behalf of adoption and special needs orphans. In January 2013 my fourth oldest, Emma, moved to Uganda as a single 19-year-old burdened for special needs orphans. By God's grace she completed the arduous paperwork process and in July 2014 she opened The Gem, a registered NGO whose sole purpose is to care for ...Expand for more
the special needs Gems of Uganda. Emma now has 60 special needs orphans in her care as well as 90+ Ugandan employees. The Gems are truly some of the sweetest little people you will ever meet and it's easy to advocate for them. Check out her website: TheGemFoundation.com In 2015 I published my first book, "Rescuing Ruby". It is the true story of rescuing our (now) 13-year-old daughter, Ruby, from the brink of death. She was found by our daughter Emma dying in the corner of an orphanage in Uganda at 13 months old and merely weighing 6 pounds. Every bit of Ruby's life is miraculous. I have also published a second book: "The Memorial Box" (both available on Amazon). For fun I write a blog at: LinnySaunders.com At the start of each year the teachers at Thomas Jefferson would go around the room asking, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" My answer never wavered, "I want to be a mom!" When asked that question I never mentioned that I wanted 18 children. Ha! I have no idea why 18, but I have 14 and 4 others who now live in heaven, so actually I have my 18. I thank the Lord every day for this beautiful life I have the joyful privilege of living - I'll be the first to admit - I have been blessed far more than I have ever deserved and I am definitely living my lifelong dream. I pray God’s blessing over all my old friends and classmates and that each one is able to grasp just how very much God loves them. His love is real, personal and completely immeasurable!
