Linda's Story

After graduation, my parents sold our house and moved to Fort Myers Florida in the early summer of 1971. At that time my parents would not allow me to stay in Cleveland "alone" even tho I had relatives there, so I had to I move with them. It impacted my life forever. I was dating Paul Burik, Garfield, Class of 1967, at the time. We became engaged, moved to Florida and married in August of 1971. Our only child, a son, Todd, was born in 1974. Paul and I divorced after 10 years of marriage, but we both still lived in Fort Myers. Paul contracted leukemia in September of 2006. He fought a tough battle and tragically by the end of January 2007 Paul passed away. His illness was attributed to being exposed to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam. Years later, I met and married a wonderful, happy go-lucky, kind, generous man named David in 1987. He has 2 daughters, Courtney who lives in Fort Myers, FL and Erin, who lives in Savannah, GA with her boyfriend. Erin works in Savannah's major hospital as a Clinical Lab Tech. My son, Todd, has been a firefighter for years and works for the City of Fort Myers Fire Department at the main station. Anne, his wife, owns Baby Boot Camp in Lee County , a mother-baby fitness program for pregnant and postpartum moms. They have given us our 2 grand children - both boys. William "Cooper" and John "Crosby". Cooper has curly light blonde hair and Crosby has straight long auburn hair. They are little munchkins and melt our hearts. I began work with the State of Florida, Department of Children and Families in 1972 and stayed with them for 35 years, eventually serving as Program Director for the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Program Office overseeing the contracted adult & children's service delivery system in Southwest Florida. I retired in 2007. UPDATE: 2013 In June, 2013, my husband and I were in a horrible car accident. Due to our injuries my husband and I spent 3 weeks in the Savannah Hospital and 6 months at home recovering. We give our thanks to God for a second chance. UPDATE 2014: In Sep 2014 David & I had the trip of a lifetime and spent 14 days in my ancestors' homeland of Slovenia. Found ancestral villages, homes and relatives! What a beautiful and friendly country! Pristine, organic, farms, gardens, beautiful flowers, amazing architecture from centuries past, castles, churches, villages, Did not want to come home. On other hand, grandsons are now 6 and 4-1/2. They are too cute and smart for their own good. LOL. And, they are the light of our lives. UPDATE 2015: Trips to Savannah, St. Maarten, (this is island where the big KLM jets land right over you on the beach, and at take off knock y...Expand for more
ou down and roll you into the water, if you;re stupid enough to stand right behind the takeoff jet blast!) Took grandsons to Legoland Florida for Crosby's 5th birthday. Weekend Class Reunion for David in Erie, PA. Visit to Cleveland, Ohio. From Sep right into Christmas helped various family members recover from various surgeries. What a last half of the year! Cooper celebrated 7th BD on Dec 30 We gave him a real Zipline for his Florida backyard! Everyone doing great!! UPDATE: 2020 We have completley recovered from the 2013 car accident and are so thankful. Our oldest, daughter, Courtney continues to lives in Fort Myers, FL as does our son ,Todd, and his family. Todd, continues to work for the City of Fort Myers Fire Department and has been promoted and moved into a management position as the Training Coordinator for the entire City Fire Department. Anne, his wife, is the now owner of Peak Fitness in Lee County which now focuses on a more open population doing both virtual and face-to-face fitness and running/coaching programs. The 2 boys are our only grandchildren. "Cooper", now 11 and in middle school, is a great student - academic and bright; loves sports and the water; He can tell you all about rifles and different guns and is an excellent target shooter. Coop was teaching Gma how to shoot a rifle this summer. He is responsible and trustworthy and a great lovable boy. "Crosby" is 10 and in 5th grade. He is extremely creative and comes up with the best inventions and ideas. He loves exploring and anything outdoors, is the greatest fisherman in both salt and freshwater and I hope he is going to teach Gma how to fish. Cros dances to his own tune and is quite a humorous grandson (like his Papa). We are so proud of the young men they are becoming. They still melt our hearts. Our middle daughter, Erin, and her boyfriend, Michael, moved from Savannah, GA and are building a house on acreage in Aiken, SC. Erin received her Physician's Assistant degree a few years back and is now working in one of South Carolina's major hospital's Emergency Rooms. Come July of 2021 I will have lived in SW Florida for 50 years! OMG! Two years ago, David and I purchased a 2nd home and 2.5 acres in Sylva, NC on a mountain in the middle of the Nanthahala National Forest. about 20 minutes south of the Great Smokey Mountains and an hour west of Asheville. For now we live 6 months in NC and 6 months in FL. and just love it! Quiet, no lines of tourist traffic, no baking sun day after day, no more stress worrying and preparing for hurricane season. (Insure the place, close the house up, roll down the hurricane shutters and let nature take it's course.) a
