Linda's Story

Upon graduation, I received a scholarship to Navarro Junior College, but in 1968 I left school early to marry my husband,Ron Hutson. We have been married 42 years...and have one child, a son, named Chris...Chris married a lovely young lady from Austin...and together they have four children...two girls---one working on her Master's, and the other a freshman, who was accepted to the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. My two grandsons are tall---one stands 6' at(age 14) while the other stands 5'8" at(age 13). They live in Minnesota. During our Air Force years...we lived in Alexandria, Louisiana...where, in 1971, I was a model for Gus Kaplan's at McArthur Village for the first Louisiana Sports Show. I also covered sports for our base newspaper and interviewed the "great" Ted Williams when he brought his baseball team to town...I published a poem in recent years, that I wrote about my interview with Williams; with the final line reading: "Then he grinned and signed his name real plain; on a napkin I gave him with a mustard stain." Following our four years in the Air Force, we moved to Dallas where I worked for the Dallas Times Herald and the Dallas Morning News...Then we moved to Commerce, Texas and went to East Texas State University now Texas A&M-Commerce...my husband began work on his doctorte while I got my bachlors in education. While at ET, I worked for various local newspapers in the area and was a student writer for the "East Texan". It was...Expand for more
during this time that I got exclusive interviews with Willie Nelson, Frank X. Tolbert, Corsicana's own Commander Kay Russell, Ingal Roodinko, Tom Johnson, and former U.S. House Speaker, Carl Albert. It was an honor for me to remain friends with Carl Albert into his last years...it was also an honor to have him guide me upon my family's move to Austin,in lobbying numerous House Bills and House Resolutions during the 67th and 68th Texas Legislative Sessions. Upon moving to Austin, in 1979 I enrolled at the University of Texas to complete my student teaching...upon graduation, I taught Special Education classes for five years to help payoff my education loans. I then began a career with the Travis County District Courts where I worked around State District Judge Harley Clark, who as a University of Texas cheerleader invented the Hook'em Horn sign. It was also in my job with the Distrit Courts that I met an old classmate of ours...Peter Kreistner...who often came into my offices as an attorney...how kind he was...and how everyone at the courthouse loved Peter. When he died, the whole legal world in Austin cried, I think... My husband and I are both retired now...and enjoy just being alive and together...traveling...church activities...genealogy...reading... writing/publishing poems...old cowboy shows...Starbucks coffee...saying our prayers and reading our Bibles. To all my classmates...I hope life after public school has been good to you...lol
