Linda's Story

Hi Friends and class of 1968. My name in school was Linda Garcia AKA Torres which is my maiden name. The Garcia is my mother's maiden name. My mother is still alive and lives in the State of Washington and is well. My father passed away March 11, 2012 and I miss him very much. My siblings are all well. I have four brothers and one sister. The only brother you may remember is David Garcia AKA Felix. My family was very strict so I did not get involved in many school functions but I did sing in the Choir. I still love to sing except I do not sing often. After high school I landed a job at Beneficial Finance in San Jose but since I did not have a car, I rode on the bus everywhere. My hope was to work hard, save and get a car. It was unfortunate that my mother and brothers left for Washington State before my graduation because she returned to see me graduate and thought I was returning with her to Washington State. I had my plans and it did not include going to Washington. I have not been close to my Mom since. I was staying with our close friends until I graduated then I rented a room in a family home and went to work for Beneficial Finance. I also worked weekends at a local Pharmacy. Eventually I did buy that car. It was a used blue two door Ford Fairlane. After a breakup with my boyfriend, I moved to San Mateo County and worked for Ampex before getting a better job at Stanford Hospital. After Stanford Hospital I found a job closer to home. I worked as an Attendance Clerk at Sequoia High School. I applied and was offered the job of Head Attendance Clerk in San Carlos. This is where I met and married my husband. I have four children this order. Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl. Our marriage did not last and I found myself a single parent for the next 15 years. I relocated to Alameda County for the schools and raised my children who were all active in sports. I started a business in San Jose after taking courses in Immigration Law, Paralegal, and Administrative Interpreter.. It went well and offered me the flexibility to watch my kids games attend PTA etc. until a new law that passed meant less work for me. I needed stability and medical insurance. The medical costs were very high for the four children and myself. Also since they all played sports someone might get hurt (and I was right) so, thought it was time to seek out yet another job that would ...Expand for more
give me a dependable income and medical insurance hence, my present job. I have worked for the same hospital now for 24 years and all my children are grown. The eldest is a correctional officer and is CERT. He went into the Air Force right out of high school and was in Desert Storm. I am very proud of him and his service to our Country. The second child is a Registered Nurse with many Certifications. I am very proud of her and her dedication to her patients and me. The Third child is the Head Basketball Coach of a two year college and has improved the lives of many young men by assisting them in moving on to four year colleges and a positive future. I am proud of his drive and for not only getting his BA but a Masters degree. The youngest has a year to finish her BA in Behavioral Science and went straight to a four year college. She took a detour and attended National Holistic Institute and had a 4.0 grade point average, lettered in excellence and was selected for employment by a 5 star Hotel. Her Grandfather was a "healer" so maybe that influenced her:) Three of my children have given me 5 beautiful Grandchildren. Four girls and one boy. I am happily married to a wonderful, loving, compassionate man who changed my life for the better. We are looking forward to our Golden Years ahead. I am still very active, employed full time, enjoy music, dancing, singing, traveling, The Arts and don't forget MOVIES and POPCORN!!! Interesting places I have visited are The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Puerto Rio, Israel, Mexico and China. Wish list for future travel include Spain, Portugal, Japan I would also like to visit places within the United States. Looking forward to: learning to swim (terrible fear since a near drowning as a child). Having time to make a bucket list and crossing them off one by one:), spending time with friends and family, sorting through my garage and looking for lost and/ or forgotten treasures and becoming more organized. My life has been so hectic and short on time for years so it will be great to finally live organized. Being organized makes me happy and I can relax. I seldom relax. I still walk and move fast. I still love to smile:) I hope to hear from classmates that remember me and maybe tell me what you remember so I can take the trip down memory lane with you. I wish you all health and happiness, Linda
