Linda's Story

Hope I am remembered as a dedicated, hard working & intelligent person. I always wanted to be a registered nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought it was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. I love to walk, cook, listen & sing music. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have my lab coat , office keys, beeper, and my running shoes on to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero is my Savior, Jesus Christ. I lived in Sylacauga from 1981 to 1985 when I graduated nursing school at Sylacauga Hospital School of Nursing. (I did go back home for a brief period of time to get my Associate in Science from ACSJC & graduated in 1984). After graduation, I was engaged & moved to Birmingham to take a job at UAB. Then in 1989, my husband & I moved to Dothan to be near his family. My biggest surprise was not being able to have more children. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the garage area and add on a room. My dream home would be complete. My son Ethan has taught me I stress too much over the little things. I would like to see Mrs. Jean Pearson, my 1st grade teacher from 1969-70. If I won $100 million, I'd give 10% of it to my church, then spend the rest on family, charities and place some in savings. I lived in a dorm in nursing school & it wasn't so bad. It could be pretty cool at times being on your own & sometimes tough, too. My current job is at a 235 bed hospital coordinating diabetes education services for patients & staff on an inpatient & outpatient basis. I share my home with my husband & son, which I find at times very messy!. Before my son was born, my husband had enrolled me in a vol. firefighter program. I had completed the program & passed my exams, I did rescue breathing on a 2 yo little boy who was a near drowning. The little boy is now 10th grade & I was chosen as Firefighter of the year for Bay Springs VFD & Houston County VFA, & nominated for the State Female Firefighter of the Year. My most dear friend is Betty Richardson Emfinger. She & I still talk with one a...Expand for more
nother after all these years. Even though we didn't become friends until the 6th grade, we had a lot of things in common such as personal values that really gelled us together. The biggest surprise that some people may get is that I am still a small person. My first job was at Russell Corp., where I got paid a little over $3 hr. to sew sweatshirt sleeves. What I remember most about it was hard work & I would welcome any of my HS classes that would finish early so I could grab a quick snooze. A childhood memory I'll never forget was the day I was saved! Other things I remember were writing every summer to my friends & my cousin, Terrie, working in the garden, running in the pasture behind our house & playing with my siblings. I married Bates Gilmore 8/24/85 & we will be celebrating our 24th anniversary. Our son, Ethan will be 13 on 8/21/09. My brothers are both married, Lynn & his wife, Debra have a 14 yo daughter, Anna. He & his wife are nurses. Donald & his wife, Tammy have 2 daughters, Camaryn, 9, Savannah, 7, & a son David who will be 1 yr. old in Oct. He is Water Manager for Stewartville's system. Lisa, my sister, is married & husband, Daniel have 3 children: Leanna, 17, Madison, 13 & Zach, 7. They own & operate Carlisle's Drug in Alex. City. My mom & dad are both retired & still live in Alexander City. I graduated from UAB in 1988 with my BSN & worked there until 1989 when Bates & I moved to Dothan. I went back to school & graduated Troy State with my Masters in Nursing in 1992. I have 3 national certifications in Nursing- Medical/Surgical, Oncology & Diabetes. I have taught nursing in the academic setting at Wallace College in Dothan & Troy State in Troy. I am active in my church (choir, SS, teaching in Kids Dept., Nursery) community fire department (Secretary) & youth football association (Concession Stand Coor.) where my son plays. I am active in our local Oncology Nursing Asso., Youth Diabetes Support Group & local diabetes coalition. Do think I may look like swiss cheese?
