Linda's Story
Hello from Monterrey, Mexico! After living in San Antonio, Texas, for the past 30 years, I decided to retire from my last job at City Hall, and seek an international position. Much to my surprise, I am now a volunteer lay missionary, living and working in Monterrey, Mexico, since September 2009. I would have never imagined myself doing this kind of work before...but as they say, God works in mysterious ways! Myself and three other missionaries are here to start a new program of home visits to the sick and dying in a very, very poor area of Monterrey. It's like pastoral hospice, which presents a real challenge since we have little or no resources to help any of these people. Our simple goal is to be present with...Expand for more
those who may be dying alone, and to offer whatever help we can in finding possible resources. The need is as tremendous as anything you can imagine! If this sounds like a really sad thing to be doing, I can assure you that there is an incredible joy in doing this work. Yes, it is hard to see people suffer, but then again, the patients and their families are so incredibly overwhelmed to know that someone from "the other side" (the U.S.) even acknowledges that they are alive! In return, their generosity...sharing even a bowl of beans and tortillas...overwhelms me as well. I will be in this job until August 2011. Not sure yet where I'll be next, but at least my Spanish should be 100% better by then! Hasta luego!
