Linda's Story
Life took some surprising, but ultimately good, turns since 1964. I moved to Federal Way, Washington, about 25 miles south of Seattle in 1977. Got my BA in psychology from SDSU ('77) and Masters in Counseling from University of Puget Sound ( '87). I have a private practice in counseling and psychotherapy and I also teach yoga at the local community center. Recently I completed a program for certification as a Yoga Therapist and have started a practice. It all keeps me very busy and fulfilled, along with my family: my son (44) and daughter (37) and their spouses and families--two grandsons and two granddaughters, who live in this area. I also have a step-son (45) and his family (3 kids) in San Diego.
My husband and I have lived over 35 years in the same house and have enjoyed the results of several remodeling projects. We currently share our home with a siamese cat who clearly expects to be in charge. He's a little spoiled, but very affectionate.
We love camping, hiking, bicycling, going to movies and theater, attending our grandkids' sports events, and being home reading, listening to music, watching TV, entertaining friends and family, and doing the puzzles in the paper together. I also have a group of women friends to hang out with and do interesting things like making soul collages, and I attend Tai Chi and Yoga classes regularly.
I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family thought that was a great idea, as my parents were both teachers before my dad went to dental school. As it turns out, they were right--I've enjoyed teaching in addition to my work as a therapist, and I love teaching yoga!
My favorite ways to relax are walking outdoors, especially around the Weyerhaeuser Headquarters about a mile from my house, and sitting by my front window listenin...Expand for more
g to music, reading and petting my cat. And, of course yoga--the best for relaxation is Yoga Nidra.
As for sports, I enjoy watching football--we host a superbowl party every year--and doing and teaching yoga, hiking in the mountains and bicycling. I was never an athlete, but I like pursuing fitness. I love to cook healthy, creative meals and eating well. I love animals of all kinds, especially cats. I think I'd like to have a therapy pet to take to nursing homes and rehab centers. And, I love good music and theater.
What I've learned from my kids is patience, perseverence, and that I don't control anything but my own self. My son was a great teacher of all those :-) I'd mellowed out a bit when my daughter came along.
Hard work has been my stock in trade. I never thought I'd be a workaholic, but I am--I love my work, and it demands a lot from me. Fortunately I have options with my profession and as a self-employed person, so I don't have to retire and stop working. I look forward to playing more in retirement, though!
If I could do one thing over, it would have been to stay in college until I graduated rather than dropping out and coming back a few years later having to put myself through with a young child. That was a hard time, but very rewarding and redeeming after feeling like a failure. My sisters and I all graduated in '77--and they are 7 and 9 years younger than I am.
My oldest friend (not eldest, but longest duration) is Janet Rose Eggert. My family moved next door to her family when we were 4 years old. We were best buds in elem. school and remained friends for many years. I met Jimmy in 6th grade, so both have been long time friends. I met Donnie Clark in 2nd grade and Teri Gravett in 4th, I think.
I enjoyed seeing so many friends again at our 50th reunion!
