Linda's Story

Life After leaving Rochester High in 1974, I moved to Royal Oak, finished my senior year and then began college at Oakland University. During my sophomore year, I got a big career break after working as a waitress at the Midtown Cafe in Birmingham. One of my regulars worked for Warner Bros. Records and recomended me for a new hire position. As I hit my 20th birthday, hanging out professionally with successful rock stars and getting paid for it I felt incredibly fortunate....then, began to explore the world in all its savory moods. Travel, art, limosines, famous people...a long way from growing up across from Avon Park. Soon, my travel wanderlust was born. I'd landed the job with Warner Records in Southfield after an independent semester at college, by writing a paper exploring the nature of the music business which i shared with my favorite "Midtown" customer...who then helped me secure an interview. Three weeks later I got the job. During those early years, I had many chances to hang out with cool, creative and (more than a few) crazy rock stars. Some, like U2, were just beginning their careers. Most of us were as green as the Irish grass. It was an awesome time to be young, attractive and paid a salary just to be immersed in music. I discovered early on that music was the universal language of all cultures. A few years later I went to England to visit musician Peter Gabriel who I was dating at the time. By the end of that trip I was hooked on exploring new places, eating great ethnic food, learning about various cultures, inspiring art and people from places other than...Expand for more
the US. Since then (and after leaving the music industry), I've been fortunate enough to travel to over 40 countries. Everywhere I've roamed I was turned on to new music. It seemed to be the bridge between those of us who couldn't communicate through a mutual language. Back in 1981, I'd promised Bono, (of U2) that I’d visit Ireland someday (when I could still find him at home and he'd respond to my letters.....) It's taken me over 20 years, several moves and a couple of careers, but I finally got to "the Mother Country" Ireland last fall. After all the places i've visited and enjoyed, it remains special. Nowadays, in between travels, I hang out in America's paradise: Maui, where i've lived for almost ten years now...after stints in Washington, DC and (too many) years in Los Angeles...I've gotten away from rock and roll and into working with kids (not too strange a jump from rock stars, believe me). I did some consulting, then went back to get my masters in education degree and then taught for a few years at a Montessori school. Now, I do my own thing with visiting children at five star resorts here...(get to finally play mommy and tourist all at once!) I teach them via a cultural, environmental and entertaining program and they have fun doing it. Life's rich pageant...seek and you shall find. I travel about three months each year. I'm fit, active, and happily single (Thanks GW Bushit for providing such progressive civil rights...not) and secure. I'd be happy to hear from any former friends or schoolmates from 'back in the day. Wishing you all the best and much aloha!
