Linda's Story

I retired September 2004, thinking that's just what I needed as the years have creeped up and pounds started to jump on too. With retirement I got bored easy, so I took mom with me to Florida to help me find a place, only to find that her mind was not as sharp as it used to be and she did't know where we were a bit of the time. But I did find a turnkey place and now we retreat to Florida for some sunshine and warmer weather. Not sure I could spend the cold winters here any more. When I live in summer clothes during winter. I still am doing some crafts, last winter we painted our place and put in some new cabinets and flooring to update things. But we do like our little place on Lake Weir. When I was young I was always cutting or fixing someone hair style. But life takes over and I had to cut 4 little boys hair for many years, but did not take that any farther. I started as a car hop in Wolf Lake, so working around food just came as an easy choice when the kids were small, then when I left that after 24 years, I went to a Temp Service and they put me to work in their office answering the phones and doing general office duties, and sending people on temporary job assignments. I learned that finding and sending qualified workers to a job could be highly stressful and I burned out quickly. But I liked that interaction with people and started working at Seyfert Foods as a Human Resource Assistant. I was to make sure all new employees had all the paperwork so we could set them up to be paid and put into the system, etc. 5 years and my job was elimaited, so I signed up for some ...Expand for more
computer classes at IVY Tech, I took several classes to learn some different programs. A friend told me about a fellow that was opening an office and needed someone part time, knowing that I knew nothing about computers, he offered to teach me, and even set it up so I could do class work on the computers at work. I worked for this guy for 16 months of which I was getting unemployment for part of the time, as I had to mail out Resumes or complete applications to several place each week. I received a call from a company in K'ville asking if I was still looking for a full time job, I had to answer YES or I could lose my Unemployment. I went for interview and got the job for a temporary time, then after 12 weeks the gal I was filling in for decided not to return. I worked in Human Resources for 7 years and EPIC TECHNICAL GROUP (DANA)closed there doors. My boss received a call from the plant manager at the old UNIVERSAL TOOL & STAMPING in Butler, Then DURA, knowing we were closing, they needed and HR person. I went for an interview and got the job. This was rough. I did last 3 years, but probably would not have except for the plant workers who made me feel needed, and would talk to me and let me know they did not want to lose me like so many before me. I lasted 3 years until I was old enough to collect SSI. I still miss the people, some from the office but most from the plant were the reason I missed very little time. We had many that could not speak our language and I would try to help them understand their benefits and work rules, etc. I loved my job... Linda Beezley Mitchell
