Linda's Story
After graduating I went to Chabot College at night while working during the day. I moved around the bay area a bit living in Alameda, Pacifica, Union City, and Hayward. I met my husband Allan in late 1983 / early 1984 while he was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Alameda. We married in May of '84 after which he was discharged from the Navy and we moved to Ely, MN where he was from. The next February we had our oldest son Chris after which we moved to Hibbing, MN where we had our daughter Nicole in Oct of '86. We decided to join the Navy again and was promptly sent to Honolulu Hawaii for 3.5 years. In Dec of '87 our son Casey was born. In 1990 the Navy sent us to Bremerton Washington where we were fortunate to stay. Allan retired from the Navy in 2005 and now works for the shipyard in Bremerton as a civilian government employee basically doing what he was doing on active duty. Our daughter Nicole welcomed Hunter Thomas into the world on August 12, 2008. We are now very proud grandparents - he is a beautiful little man. In February of 2011 we lost our oldest son Christopher - life is so different without him.
Over the years we have become extremely involved in Boy Scouting as we raised our children. We find a great deal of fulfillment in helping young people grow into valuable members of our communities while they learn to serve others. I have spent the last 6 summers in Germany working at a Boy Scout Summer Camp and the summer of 2011 I will be the Camp Director for a camp in Kandersteg Switzerland which is an amazing opportunity in a magical location. The youth who attend are primarily US citizens living abroad for a variety of reasons, the large majority are from military (Army) families. The reality...Expand for more
of having a parent down range is very real for them and working and / attending a summer camp program is a great distraction and enhances the quality of their lives. During the course of the rest of the year my husband and I work together to bring quality programing to our geographical Scouting area in many ways.
While I didn't become involved with Rainbow in my area I still feel as if I have maintained the ideals of service to others that I learned as a Rainbow Girl. I have dedicated my life to service and will continue to do so. I reflect upon and share fond memories about my time in Rainbow often.
I am still in contact with Donna Patters, and Greg Steele as well as a few others of you now as a result of facebook and classmates. Greg has a daughter born 2 days before my youngest son. They became friends and Jordan even stayed with us for a short time when she started college in Washington. It is great to talk and share with him and it is especially great to talk with Jordan as she becomes a young women. She just became a parent herself of a beautiful little girl and it was so nice to be able to visit and hold her. I visit with Dorothy Branum each time I am going through Livermore and occasionally on those visits I see Lynn and Genelle. I used to see D'Anna (Eastridge) Patton and we occasionally exchange a Christmas Card or two as I do with Margrate (Gomez) Krug my first roomate in my first apt. Unfortunately, I have all but lost touch with everyone else and that makes me a little sad. We should do something about that. Just got back from a little trip to the Bay Area and saw a few of you and our old stomping grounds or at least what I could identify of it - it has changed so much! But haven't we all :).
